So, the title race is over and we know UCD have been relegated.
It’s just that nobody on earth can predict the other eight teams’ finishing positions. And let me tell you, the excitement that comes from that uncertainty is unrivalled.
Even looking at this weekend’s fixtures – one of the last sets of fixtures before Europe gives managers excuses – the prices will tell you that nobody has a clue what’s going on.
The only clear odds-on favourites are Pat’s away to UCD and sure you’d never want to watch that anyway.
Cork and Drogheda could decide the race to avoid second-bottom while Shels and Derry is mouth-watering, even without Damien Duff roaming the touchline.
Sligo have been the biggest disappointments this year, while their opponents Bohs have been the biggest surprise, and yet you wouldn’t at all be shocked to see Sligo hammer them.
Another week of the most hipster-friendly, suddenly-marketable league in western Europe. Welcome!
Drogheda have the better XI, that much I cannot deny, but without their talisman in Freddie Draper who misses out through suspension, it’s very hard to see past a home win for Cork whose form in the last six weeks has seen the current management team confirmed for the remainder of the season.
For all the faults that City have shown earlier in the year, they’re now more risk-averse and rely on their pace running into channels to catch sides on the hop.
Drogs and Kevin Doherty are likely deflated knowing they’ve lost their two key signings as they return back from their loans from Lincoln City, and this could set their course for the rest of the campaign.
I’ll keep backing Rovers to win at even money because they generally just find a way.
Stephen Bradley very much has O’Donnell’s number in these games, as the Hoops have now hit nine goals in a row without reply.
That 2-0 win earlier this month was a sub-strength Rovers team beating Dundalk with relative ease. Aaron Greene, who’s far from first choice, netted twice and they ran out quite comfortable in the end.
There’s no reason whatsoever to think this is anything other than a great price.
Shelbourne were turned over by Pat’s last time out, but Duff himself will tell you that it took a masterpiece of a free kick to be the difference.
Ironically, the Saints are essentially their bogey team and can exclude them from the form stakes when assessing the progress made by the Reds in the last two months.
Outside of their two defeats to St. Pat’s, Shels have either won or kept a clean sheet. It’s become an incredible habit and one that means they’re a consistent betting proposition.
Derry City have an excuse every week about squad rotation and that culture is problematic in-house.
Sligo Rovers have reached the end of their tether and I think this could well be the defeat that pushes John Russell out the door, club legend or otherwise.
Bohs might have only drawn last week, but it felt like a win in the context as they came from two-nil down to their rivals and league leaders.
Knowing they can reflect upon positive results against the top two, I’d expect them to go Sligo and capitalise upon their lowly state.
Especially as Jonathan Afolabi.
