At about 9pm on Friday night, I was ready to call the title race over. Shamrock Rovers’ business model means that winning the league is the primary objective in any given year and while their upcoming European engagements are certainly a big deal for fans and players alike, Stephen Bradley knows his end goal.
So when they go 2-0 up away to one of their three apparent title contenders and Derry City still haven’t put Cork City away, you’d have a hard time convincing me that there’d be an acute gap between the teams in the table for Rovers to even have to second guess themselves.
Then you see Bohs pull two back, Pat’s bag to jump ahead of the best defensive unit in the league and Derry professionally add to their lead against the Rebel Army. This clash between Shamrock Rovers and Derry City will either be the making or breaking of a run-in, making it the most important game this season.
While Pat’s, who are now the most likely side to join in this conversation, need to topple former boss Stephen O’Donnell in Oriel Park. What a night we have in store.

Pat’s to Win
Nobody is truly sure what Pat’s manager Jon Daly’s philosophy is in Inchicore, but the sample size is big enough now to trust them to get wins rather than laboured draws. In fact, they haven’t drawn a game under his stewardship because they’re not wasting time with passive possession.
Meanwhile, everyone knows what Stephen O’Donnell wants; he just can’t seem to produce it consistently. We are now in a position to suggest the Saints should be favourites for this game, especially as this has turned into a derby for the Pat’s players who feel O’Donnell left them for no valid reason before the season began. We should see the away side coming out on top.
Over 2.5 Goals
Especially given the fact that these matches tend to be fairly chaotic meetings now, they’ve split eight goals between them in their two meetings so far this season. Generally speaking, the Saints don’t have many Under 3-goal games unless they’re playing the likes of a Shelbourne side who you know will sit in.
Dundalk definitely will not, so expect many high-probability opportunities. Just to prove that point – of the last nine games to feature Pat’s, only two of them have finished with less than three goals and both of them came against Shels.

Shamrock Rovers to Win
I’ll keep saying it until I’m proven wrong, but Rovers are the best team in the country by a good distance. The biggest problem I find with them is that they’re doing it in second gear; suggesting to me that they know even if their early-game exploits have a setback, they can just switch it on to overcome.
But they haven’t been able to due to the nature of the concessions. They fell totally flat to Bohs because the atmosphere in the ground was a leveller and they couldn’t compete with the commitment off the ball. That same cauldron will not exist on Monday night.
Over 2.5 Goals
In Rovers’ last eight games, six of them have seen at least three goals and of the ones that didn’t, one game saw three different players set off down in Cork in what was one of the weirdest games of football played not just on this island, but any identifiable land mass.
Rovers don’t exert control over games, much to the annoyance of their season ticket holders, but it does make predicting the goals in their games very straightforward at least.
