Euro Under-21 Championships 2023: France v Italy Cluj Arena, Romania
Thursday, June 22: 8pm TV: UEFA.tv
France U21 to win
France were one of the most impressive teams in qualifying for the Euros, winning eight out of ten games and drawing the other two. Italy were also undefeated in qualifying but needed a win over Ireland on the final day to book passage to Georgia and Romania this summer.
The French possess a very mature side for U21 level, with 19 of their 23-man squad aged 21 or older. They also have some of the most sought-after young talents in Europe, with the likes of Manu Kone and Amine Gouiri linked with big money moves.
Victory over Italy will go a long way towards guaranteeing the French top spot in Group D, with games against Switzerland and Norway to come. They should have enough to do so.
Amine Gouiri to score anytime
Amine Gouiri enjoyed a decent first season at Rennes, scoring 15 goals in 33 league appearances on their way to fourth in Ligue 1. He also finished as France’s top scorer in qualifying for the Euros, scoring five times as France topped Group H.
A striker playing – and scoring – regularly in one of Europe’s big five leagues could do serious damage at the Euros this summer and Gouiri is good value to open his account against Italy on Thursday.
France were one of the most free-scoring teams during qualifying for the Euros, netting 31 in ten games at a rate of over three goals per game. The French put five past group rivals Ukraine in a 5-0 drubbing in Brest, no small feat considering Ukraine finished with 23 points.
They scored three goals or more in six of their ten qualifiers, including a thrilling 3-3 away draw with Ukraine and putting seven past Armenia.
Italy, on the other hand, were far more pragmatic in qualifying, scoring 19 times in 10 games at a rate of just under two per game. The Italians did score in every qualifying game, however, and will cause problems for the French here. This Group D opener could be a high-scoring affair.
Over 9.5 corners
Perhaps unsurprisingly, this Italian U21 side wins an awful lot of corners. In their last five games, Italy have won 49 corners at a rate of practically ten per game. France, on the other hand, won an average of just over three per game in their qualifying campaign and also had more shots than any other nation in qualifying, attempting 244 shots in 10 games.
They are likely to win at least a few corners of their own, and while Italy may not match their average of 10 corners per game, a set piece probably represents their best chance of scoring against the French and they will hope to put their opponents under pressure with a number of corner kicks.
