Euro 2024 qualifier – Ireland v Gibraltar
Monday, June 19: 7.45pm
Aviva Stadium, Dublin

TV: RTE 2, Viaplay

Gibraltar +3

Ireland’s defeat in Greece has left their already slim hopes of automatic qualification in ruins. Stephen Kenny’s side will now almost certainly need results in Paris and Amsterdam if they are to give themselves any hope of finishing in the top two, meaning tonight’s game against Gibraltar could be more than a little flat.

As expected, the away side have been the whipping boys in Group B, losing all three of their games so far without scoring a goal. However, they have not been terrible, losing each of their three games 3-0, including 3-0 defeats against both France and the Netherlands.

Ireland have struggled to score goals under Kenny, managing just 21 goals in 23 games since he took over in 2020. Ireland also toiled against Gibraltar when they met during the Euro 2020 qualifiers, claiming an unconvincing 2-0 win at the Aviva in June 2019.

The travelling side have managed a certain degree of respectability in their three qualifiers to date and can claim an even more respectable result in Dublin.

Evan Ferguson to have 3 or More Shots on Target

Chief among Ireland’s struggles in Athens was their inability to create goalscoring chances. The Boys in Green managed just three efforts on target on Friday night, including a Nathan Collins shot from distance and a late deflected effort.

However, Gibraltar have faced a total of 28 shots in their three qualifiers to date at a rate of over nine per game and it is highly likely that Ireland will match that average on Monday night. Evan Ferguson didn’t register a single shot on target on Friday night, but the Brighton striker was instrumental in Ireland’s equaliser, flicking on for Nathan Collins to tap home.

He has now registered one goal and one assist in three international starts and has an excellent chance of adding to his record against Gibraltar on Monday. It would be a surprise if he didn’t pepper the Gibraltar goal with shots.

Over 10.5 Corners

Unsurprisingly, given the number of shots they have faced, Gibraltar have also faced a huge number of corners, facing a whopping 42 in qualifying to date. They have faced a staggering 112 shots in three games, including 52 against the Netherlands, and have registered 27%, 13%, and 18% possession in their three games so far.

Ireland may not be the strongest team in Group B, but they should expect to record a minimum of 70% possession playing at home, while they should also expect to take at least 20 shots. If that comes to pass, there is every chance that Ireland will win 11 or more corners.

Under 2.5 Goals

Gibraltar have shown an impressive resilience throughout this qualifying campaign. To have only conceded nine goals from 112 shots is genuinely impressive, especially considering they have come up against France and the Netherlands, albeit a poor Dutch side under Ronald Koeman.

They have shown enough to suggest that they are more than capable of frustrating Ireland, who struggled to break Greece down on Friday and while they should claim their first win of the campaign against Gibraltar, it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see them struggle to do so.
