Both Teams to Score
Netherlands looked to be on the ascendancy at fulltime against Croatia on Wednesday night thanks to Club Brugge’s Noa Lang equalising in the 96th minute. But those wiley Croats dug deep and secured their place in the final against Spain with two Extra Time goals. The Dutch are strong on home soil and have scored at least two goals in nine of their last 12, they’ll surely get one here.
Italy aimed at frustrating the Spanish on Thursday night but were unlocked late in the game by Espanyol’s Joselu who just can’t seem to stop scoring for the national side. Gli Azzurri desperately need a regular goalscorer but they have scored at least one in five of their last six on their travels. Despite their talent in the back row, the Dutch rarely go a home game without conceding so a Both Teams to Score pick gets us started.
Over 3.5 Goals
The home side will be gunning for victory here after a disappointing end to their semifinal where they ran out of steam. As mentioned above, they’ve scored at least two goals in nine of their last 12 home games and could go one better here. Italy missed some good chances against Spain and really should’ve scored more, both teams will be going for it here and we’re likely looking at Over 3.5 Goals being scored.
Under 3.5 Cards
Both sides are pretty well-behaved, picking up 3,2,2,1 and 2,2,1,1,1 bookings over their last five home/away non-World Cup games. Of course, the Dutch did lose their heads at the World Cup against Argentina but both teams did in fairness in a high-pressure match. It’s a different setting here and with the above records we really shouldn’t be seeing four cards produced by the referee.
Netherlands or Italy to Win on Penalties
The problem with this Dutch side is that they rely on individuals and aren’t playing effectively as a team. It’s a common trait with Ronald Koeman sides and as such they can be exposed in certain areas. Italy’s problem is that they don’t have a regular goalscorer but they can still punish sides.
There is plenty of creative talent in the Netherlands squad however so we reckon they’ll get two goals while Italy have shown they’re improving of late and should also get two against a defence that conceded two against Croatia, Poland and Wales over recent home games. We have this one going all the way and being decided on penalties.
