Thursday 7.45pm: Spain v Italy
Nations League semi-final
De Grolsch Veste Stadium, Enschede (Netherlands)
TV: Viaplay Sports 1
In the second semi-final of the Nations League, Spain take on Italy… in the Netherlands.
Italy will be keen to get their national side back on track after missing out on the World Cup, while under manager Luis Enrique Spain had their moments but just came up short against Morocco in the Last 16, losing on penalties to exit the tournament.
Enrique’s replacement Luis de la Fuente will be keen to get his hands on silverware, as will Euro 2020 winner Roberto Mancini who remains in the Azzurri dugout despite that failure to qualify for Qatar 2022.

The Draw
The last six meetings between these two sides have seen two wins for each and two draws. Spain won the last meeting but were up against a ten-man Italian side. Before that, was a 1-1 draw in Euro 2021.
Both sides are very well matched and balanced all over the field. I can see both finding the net at some stage, but ultimately extra-time or penalties deciding the fate of whoever goes through.
Italy to Receive the Most Cards
Italy have received 14 yellow cards and one red card in their last six matches against Spain. This averages out to about 2.3 cards per game. Italy, as we have seen in Euro 2020, are no stranger to a cynical foul when needs be, and don’t expect them to shy away from it here.
Anytime Assist – Lorenzo Pellegrini
Lorenzo Pellegrini has enjoyed a solid season for Roma. He notched nine assists to pair with eight goals – not bad at all considering the role he plays for his club is less attacking focussed than for the national team.
Pellegrini will likely start on the right, high up the field looking to provide service to men making runs into the box. This is exactly how we see him getting an assist. He’s at value, and will be looking for opportunities to further strengthen his place in the Azzurri line-up.
Player to Have 1 or More Shots on Target – Federico Chiesa
Federico Chiesa hasn’t played as much football this season as he would have liked, and has continually struggled with injury since his ACL tear in January 2022. He’s only managed 29 appearances this term, scoring three, and assisting on six occasions.
However, he ranks highly amongst European competition in relation to his shots total with 2.62 per ninety. He fits well into Roberto Mancini’s system and should see this as his opportunity to make an impact and set the tone for the rest of 2023.
