Friday football acca tips
All 7.45pm kick-offs
Derry City v Shelbourne – Shels and Draw
Bohemians v Sligo Rovers – Both Teams to Score
Drogheda v Cork City – Drogheda to Win
Shamrock Rovers v Dundalk – Rovers to Win
Just this week alone, we’ve had former St Pat’s boss, Stephen O’Donnell, go to his old stomping ground before seeing his eleven men Dundalk turned over by the ten-men St Pats after a mass brawl and a winner in the last ten minutes.
We’ve also had league favourites, Shamrock Rovers, lose to second-bottom-placed Cork City due to having three players sent off for seemingly nothing, as well as Derry City and Sligo Rovers exchanging performance disorders and UCD even scoring a goal.
I swear, why anyone else in Europe would watch a different football league is beyond me. This series of games officially marks the halfway stage, too – and what a set of fixtures we have in store for us.
Shelbourne have secured a reputation in this country – as both the most resolute defensive unit and the most boring team to watch in the country. Given that Derry need to overcommit to break teams down at home, this fits perfectly into what Shels do best.
The Candystripes are converting their chances at the Brandywell at about 8% which is half their tally on their travels. Shels, for all that they’re dull, are finishing 13% of their shots on the road – akin to surprise package Bohemians, we’re backing the away side in the Double Chance market.
Bohemians v Sligo Rovers – Both Teams to Score
Bohs were totally caught unawares by Shels’ total blanket dominance of them last week from a defensive perspective. It’s not surprising either, given how much the Gypsies rely on low-percentage chances to be converted via Jordan Flores or Ali Coote.
Jonathan Afolabi is their outlet, but he’s not firing against sides who know how to defend him. And while speaking of sides who can’t defend, Sligo are the visitors to Dalymount this week. Sligo have kept just two clean sheets all year – the same amount as bottom feeders UCD, and Max Mata is back healthy for Sligo Rovers, so we know they’ll be scoring too.
Drogheda v Cork City – Drogheda to Win
Cork City are entirely reliant on Ruairi Keating to score goals – the man is second to only Freddie Draper in terms of xG, and while this game features the two xG leaders in that sense, one of these teams is able to spread their reliance across other sources.
Cork have overachieved massively compared to their performance levels while Drogheda have considerably underachieved, boasting multiple Team of the Year candidates so far. Expect that record to adjust back to the mean here as City play with less pressure now that the gap to UCD has opened up.
Shamrock Rovers v Dundalk – Rovers to Win
I won’t go into the specifics of what happened with Shamrock Rovers on Friday night, but to say there’s motivation from both their manager and players to produce a season-best performance is under-selling it. They’re the most unified group I’ve ever seen that have had six red cards through eighteen games in a league season.
But to add to that, Dundalk didn’t get out of the dressing room in Inchicore until after 11pm last Friday. Stephen O’Donnell has a lot of promise as a coach, but this particular tactic to set things right feels like a severe misstep before playing a team you might struggle to get the ball off of. It’s a Home Win for us here.
