22- ACCA CRACKER - NEW CAP 1024

There was a brief moment last week where the League of Ireland hype train slowed down. People were questioning the drop-off in crowds at various grounds and for a second, it appeared like the momentum that’s been gathered around the league died a death.

That was until the Irish U17s beat hosts Hungary in the European Championships courtesy of four goals scored by St. Pat’s players and a full squad bar two that play domestically.

And the title race of course. As Rovers climbed to the summit, it appeared to be all over and the experts were writing the league as done. However, Drogheda finally got their due returns and shocked Tallaght by running out 2-1 winners.

This week, we’ve a Dublin derby that has European permutations as well as the Stephen O’Donnell derby. I’m telling you, you might have to occasionally have to watch a game in what is essentially a cowshed, but we’re never short of a storyline.

Drogheda v UCD – Over 2.5 Goals

That game in Tallaght changed up people’s perceptions of Drogheda. Yes, as seen by their first goal, they can absolutely go direct if they want to, but there’s so much football in them, and given the way the near-first half of the season has gone, I’m happy to avoid backing them at home at short prices.

Instead, I think Weavers Park will be subject to an increased amount of goals down to one simple factor: Freddie Draper has found his shooting boots. The league leader in xG, his chances are always flowing and now with him feeling confident, expect games to open up earlier than they’re used to being.

Bohemians v Shelbourne – Shelbourne to Win

This might seem like an odd shout given the way that last week’s results went, but I think the way that Bohs clawed a point back against Dundalk will give them false conceptions about just how good they are.

A set piece scramble and a free kick that went straight in despite being a cross? The only real motivator here is that they’re still technically in or around Rovers, but you could have said that last week.

Shels will be able to handle Afolabi holding the ball up, and given how they turn teams over, I’d be surprised if they didn’t take the lead in this game.

Cork City v Shamrock Rovers – Both Teams to Score

Maybe it’s their 4-4 draw that’s playing in my head, or perhaps it’s the fact that Shamrock Rovers were so easily undone by a long ball against Drogs, but Ruairi Keating is the perfect striker to do exactly that once more.

And for all that Rovers are comfortably the better side, they’re looking so tetchy at the back now – a concern they’re going to carry into Europe. City might be goal-shy when it comes to multiple contributors, but Keating himself doesn’t need any complements it seems.

St. Pat’s v Dundalk – St. Pat’s to Win

Pat’s are welcoming Jon Daly as their new full-time manager, and while that appointment hardly inspires, their approach clearly improved under him – in terms of moving the ball in the final third and converting their chances.

This game is the epitome of teams who are top-two or bottom-two in alternating weeks based on performances, but after Dundalk’s last-gasp win over bottom feeders Cork and shipping a two goal lead over Bohs last week, you couldn’t back them with any confidence.
