Wednesday 8pm: Brighton v Manchester City TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League
Brighton to Win
This fixture had the look of a title-deciding game a few weeks ago, but Manchester City’s relentless winning run, coupled with Arsenal’s complete and utter capitulation, means that it is now a dead rubber. Even Brighton have nothing to play for after all but securing Europa League football in Sunday’s victory over Southampton. Only a defeat on Wednesday night coupled with an eight-goal defeat at Aston Villa on the last day of the season would see Brighton lose out on Europa League football.
With two cup finals on the horizon, City are unlikely to take Wednesday’s game too seriously, giving Brighton a chance of taking a huge scalp. The hosts beat City 3-2 in their final home game of the season two seasons ago after City had already wrapped up the league title and there is every chance that they will repeat the trick again on Wednesday.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side have already beaten Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea this season and are more than capable of beating a City side with more than one eye on their bid for a treble in two weeks’ time.
Evan Ferguson to Have 2 or More Shots on Target
Evan Ferguson scored his first-ever Premier League brace in Brighton’s 3-1 win over Southampton on Sunday as his stock continues to rise. The 18-year-old forward has now scored ten times in all competitions for Brighton this season, including six goals in the Premier League. He has scored six times in nine Premier League starts and averages 1.9 shots per game in the league this season, despite making a number of appearances off the bench.
There is a good chance that he will find the target at least twice on Wednesday even though he is playing against a City side that almost always restricts its opponents to a low number of shots on target. However, Pep Guardiola’s side have already taken their foot off the pedal, conceding six shots on target against an awful Chelsea side on Sunday. Ferguson is good value here to find the target twice on Wednesday night.
Wednesday night sees a meeting between two of the best disciplined sides in the Premier League. The away side boast the second-best disciplinary record in the division, receiving 42 yellow cards and one red card in 36 games, while Brighton are in fourth place with 52 yellow cards and no red cards in the same number of games.
Considering neither side has anything to play for on Wednesday, there is little reason for either side to pick up a litany of yellow cards. City didn’t pick up a single card in their first game as league champions on Sunday and are unlikely to deviate too much from that record against Brighton.
Over 9.5 Corners
Both sides also find themselves at the top of the Premier League corner’s table. The visitors have won the second-most corners in the league this season, averaging 6.4 corners per game, while Brighton are just slightly behind them in third on 6.1 corners per game.
Both sides play an attacking brand of possession-based football, so it is hardly surprising that they boast such high corner averages. There is a good chance that we will see 10 corners or more on Wednesday night.
