22- ACCA CRACKER - NEW CAP 1024

Cork City v St. Patrick’s Athletic – Over 2.5 Goals

With both teams now sans their managers, it does certainly open things up to be more free on the ball with no particularly obvious ramifications.

It’s an odd situation for St Pat’s because they were third last week and with the ebb and flow of results for every other team, bar Shamrock Rovers, you could make the argument that Tim Clancy is as likely to get them European football as anyone else on the market.

Cork were a tad different in that they were totally awful. Their counter-attacking play which centred around booting it to Ruairi Keating in channels and hoping for the best clearly didn’t enthuse their squad, and now with that idea out of the frame, they begin to focus on losing high-scoring games again.

Drogheda v Derry City – Drogheda and the Draw

We don’t know how Derry City will react to losing that huge game to Shamrock Rovers, but I do know they’ll want to return to what they do best and that’s pinging the ball on the deck and creating opportunities through long phases of play.

But Drogheda is not part of that plan. The pitch is incredibly tight and lends itself to going long which should in theory cause Derry City to fall into a trap of trying to force the issue instead of being patient.

This is one of those games they need to win if people are to start taking them seriously again, so you can only imagine how much of a struggle it will be if they’re level at half-time.

Shamrock Rovers v Bohemians – Rovers to Win

Shamrock Rovers were the best side in the country when they were struggling, so the process Stephen Bradley has put in place is clearly working – and has been for four years.

They’re not at the stage where their heads are being turned by Europe, either and while the 2-2 with Shelbourne came as a total shock, it’s really their only blemish post-Paddy’s Day.

Bohs will try to match Rovers with intensity rather than sitting back because this derby simply doesn’t allow for that anymore, especially when you’re the side who’s top of the league – but this is the same blueprint they had on April 7th when Rovers won 2-0 relatively comfortably and I’d expect more of the same here.

Shelbourne v UCD – Under 2.5 Goals

While Dara Keane might be a one-man wrecking machine, UCD are still a little bit gutless. And that’s fine. They have been since day dot.

But the quick-flowing football in which we’ve always associated them with hasn’t been present. After beating Cork, drawing with Bohs and putting in a good display against Dundalk, it seems there’s a bit of belief about them in the final third.

The way Shels set up typically means their build-up play is direct out from the back, but given UCD will be happy to see them struggle to break them down, this game could flip a script rather easily.

Shels have massively benefitted from own goals and still have no identity in the final third outside of Jack Moylan’s quick feet and Matty Smith half-arriving onto second balls. And a point here without needing to exert themselves sounds like a good night’s work for Andy Myler.

Sligo Rovers v Dundalk – Both Teams to Score

Saturday, 7:45pm

Russell Ball is in full flow in Sligo now and belief is through the roof. Of course none of it is relevant without the offerings of Max Mata in front of goal, and it’s primarily because of him that I offer up this selection.

Dundalk are quite the defensive unit when away from home, having conceded just four times in their six trips around the country so far, but Mata’s opener at Oriel Park is exactly the kind of striker’s IQ that cuts even Andy Boyle open.

Sligo Rovers are conceding a goal a game at home right now and that’s largely down to the fact that Russell is mid-process when it comes to finalising an identity that he wants his teams to play with. It’s a short-term pain for a long-term gain but I’ll take my few bob while the iron is hot.
