Thursday, 8pm: Brighton v Man United
Premier League
TV: Sky Sports Football

Draw

Manchester United took a giant step towards Champions League football with a win over Aston Villa at the weekend and can make almost certain of a top four spot with a win at Brighton on Thursday night.

However, they have lost their last two league games against the Seagulls and have not won at Brighton when fans have been in the Amex, winning twice during the Covid-19 lockdown and losing their other three meetings there.

The hosts are fresh from a 6-0 mauling of Wolves at the weekend, but their 3-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest the week before has significantly damaged their Champions League hopes and it would take a minor miracle for them to finish in the top four now. Brighton and United played out a tense 0-0 draw in the FA Cup just two weeks ago and it wouldn’t be surprising to see a similar outcome on Thursday night.

Man United to Receive the Most Yellow Cards

The two sides find themselves at opposite ends of the Premier League’s disciplinary table. Roberto De Zerbi’s side boast the best disciplinary record in the league, picking up just 39 yellow cards in 31 games so far this season.

The Red Devils, on the other hand, are near the bottom of the disciplinary table, picking up 67 yellow cards and two red cards in 32 games. With players like Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in their ranks, United always have a decent chance of picking up a few yellow cards in every game they play and it would be a huge surprise if they didn’t “win” the card count on Thursday night.

Brighton are likely to put United under significant pressure and the likes of Casemiro are almost certainly going to be drawn into fouls that could leave them in danger of a yellow card.

Brighton to have 6 or More Shots on Target

Only Arsenal and Manchester City average more shots per game than Brighton in the league this season. De Zerbi’s Seagulls have been a breath of fresh air and have dominated most of the games they have played. In their six league games since returning from the international break, Brighton have registered a whopping 50 shots on target at a rate of over eight per game.

United, meanwhile, regularly face a high volume of shots in away league games. David De Gea may lead the way in the race for the Golden Glove, but he has faced 37 shots in his last five away league games at a rate of over five per game.

Brighton will be looking for revenge after last month’s FA cup semi-final defeat and are likely to put United under the cosh. It wouldn’t be surprising to see them rack up a high shot count.

Over 10.5 Corners

If Brighton do put United under the cosh, they are also likely to win a significant number of corners. The home side have the third-highest corner average in the league, winning an average of 6.2 corners per game.

The away side, on the other hand, concede an average of 5.4 corners per game, one of the highest rates in the league. They also win an average of five corners per game and should at least win some of their own, with all signs pointing towards a high overall corner count on Thursday.
