After landing a 44/1 Bet Builder for the first leg when West Ham visited Belgium, Paddy Murphy is back to try and repeat the trick when the Hammers host Gent in their Europa Conference League quarter-final.

West Ham v Gent – Europa League quarter-final, second leg (Agg: 1-1)
Thursday, April 20

TV: BT Sport 2, 8pm

Both Teams to Score

West Ham have kept four clean sheets over their last 12 home fixtures against Everton, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, three of the current bottom four in the Premier League, and AEK Larnaca. Gent have scored a total of 16 goals on their recent travels and a total of seven over their five away games in the competition so far.

We saw in the first leg that Gent don’t fear the English side at all and will be confident, thanks to their scoring record and West Ham’s shaky defence of getting at least one here. The Hammers have scored in all eight of their most recent home games and in all of their home Conference League games as well. Both Teams to Score has some decent value for those stats.

Jarrod Bowen to Score or Assist

Jarrod Bowen has been back among the goals of late, scoring five over his last eight at home for the Irons. He obviously relishes playing on the European stage too, scoring a total of five goals in the Conference League and has chipped in with a handful of assists this season too. We fancy him to either score or create something here.

Over 3.5 Cards

We’re going a tad against the stats here but for a good reason. Both West Ham and Gent are very well disciplined in their league fixtures with both sitting either bottom or second last in their respective disciplinary tables. However, the first round saw the referee producing five yellow cards and with the pressure on here we reckon tempers might flare somewhat.

Both teams know very well how the other plays now and we’re going to see another feisty midfield battle as each team tries to nullify the other in the centre of the park. Four cards seems very likely in what will surely be a high-pressure game.

Hugo Cuypers to have 2 or More Shots on Target

It was no surprise that Hugo Cuypers got Gent’s goal last week – the Belgian has scored 19 league goals for his side this season with another six coming in cup competitions. Tough to see Gent sitting back against West Ham, it’s just not how they play football. West Ham will be confident of having more possession than in Belgium thanks to being at home but the visitors are a good unit and will work the ball forward to both Cuypers and Gift Orban in attack.

Gent had 15 shots in total last week, the way West Ham defend it’s not hard to see Cuypers landing two shots on target at the London Stadium.

West Ham to Win

This one will be closer than the odds are predicting but what was evident from the first leg was David Moyes’ plan to keep Gent within striking distance for the home leg. The hosts have only lost one of their last eight fixtures and one of their last eight on home soil too. Gent have actually only won one of their away games in the competition so far and while they’ll certainly threaten West Ham, their Premier League experience should stand to them here and see them winning over the 90 minutes.
