Norwich And Draw Double Chance
We’re at the sharp end of the 2022/23 Championship season now and, once the dust has settled at The Riverside on Friday night, both Middlesbrough and Norwich will have just four games left and 12 points to play for before the shutters come down. Heading into this weekend’s curtain raiser Boro are 4th with a six-point cushion to the final playoff spot.
Their automatic hopes are pretty much over with Burnley already up and Sheffield United in second having a very healthy eight-point gap to Boro, a game in hand and a better goal difference to boot. It’s all about creeping into the playoffs for Norwich and they’ve got just one point to make up on the top six but, on current form, they may well miss out.
Both of these are wobbling of late with both winning just one of their last five Championship games each. Boro have won one, drawn two and lost two while The Canaries have won one, drawn three and lost one.
The hosts are big favourites but Norwich are actually in slightly better form. Michael Carrick’s crew are good at home but David Wagner’s side are decent on the road. At the prices I think Norwich And Draw Double Chance is the bet here, especially with half of their last 10 combined games in the league ending in stalemate.
Over 2.5 Goals
From a neutral perspective we’ll be hoping this game plays out more like the hosts’ recent matches than the visitors’. Boro have scored the second-most goals in the league but have a mid-table defence which which equals fireworks. Norwich have scored 20 goals fewer than Middlesbrough and conceded eight fewer on 42.
Boro’s last seven games have witnessed 28 goals with a low of two, a high of six and an average of exactly four a match. Norwich have been far more reserved over the same timeframe with just 11 goals in their last seven (1.58 a game) and five of those coming inside the same 90 minutes.
It’s two styles clashing but, with Boro being at home and having such outstanding numbers in terms of goals per game, I think we have to side with there being a fair bit of action in this game, especially as they’ve conceded eight in their last three. We’ll take Over 2.5 Goals.
Middlesbrough’s Chuba Akpom has been the standout performer for these two, especially from a goal-scoring point of view this season. He’s bagged a stunning 27 goals in 36 appearances which is 17 more than anyone on his own team and 16 more than Norwich’s top scorer, Josh Sargent.
While we’re backing The Canaries to get something out of this game you simply cannot back anyone on their playing staff to score with any confidence as we’re more looking to where Boro might give a goal or two away. However, if someone’s going to net the most likely is Akpom by a mile and he’s on spot kicks to boot. It’s got to be Akpom to Score Anytime.
Aaron Ramsey to Have 1 or More Shots on Target
Aaron Ramsey (no, not that one) has been a key part of Middlesbrough’s play in the latter part of the season while on loan from Aston Villa and he’s been an ever present of late. He loves to get into the box late and have a pop.
He’s bagged four goals from 10 appearances, including one last time out, and is averaging 0.9 Shots on Target per 90 minutes played for Boro. As such, I really like the price on Ramsey To Have 1 or More Shots on Target here.
Max Aarons to Commit 1 or More Fouls
For Norwich, Max Aarons tops the naughty list with 10 bookings this season. He’s not their most prolific fouler by any means, but when he does get in trouble with the ref he does it in style. The full back commits the second-fewest fouls per 90 minutes of anyone in the Canaries squad but that’s what’s making the price here.
He’s been trending upwards in this market of late and, with a tricky away day to one of the division’s best sides, I don’t think we’re asking too much for Aarons to Commit 1 Or More Fouls.
