Europa League quarter-final, first leg
Thursday 5.45pm: Gent v West Ham TV:BT Sport 2
Both Teams to Score
Gent have certainly been among the goals of late, scoring a very healthy 19 goals over their last five fixtures, while over their last five on home turf have scored seven while conceding just two. West Ham are finally finding a bit of form, winning four of their last six games, drawing one and losing one, scoring 10 goals while on their recent travels have won two and lost three, scoring four and conceding nine.
While the hosts don’t conceded many at home it’s evident that the Hammers are loving European competition and do raise their game, they already put three past Belgian opposition Anderlecht in the group stage of the competition and they should be good for at least one here while the home side’s stats certainly suggest they’ll get at least one.
Over 10.5 Corners
In the Belgian League, Gent average 6.25 corners per game and on home soil the figure stands at 6.81. West Ham’s corner stats read as 5.48 on average while on the road they gather 5.57 on average.
We’ve seen at least 11 corners in all three of the teams last three European games played at home/away and with both averaging fairly high numbers we reckon we’ll see at least 11 corners here again.
Julien De Sart usually sits in front of Gent’s back three and offers them some additional protection. He’s potentially going to have a tough ask on his hands here in keeping apace with the attacks of Danny Ings and Michail Antonio, should manager David Moyes go with a front two.
Should he go with one up top with three supporting midfielders behind Antonio or Ings, usually Said Benrahma, Jarrod Bowen and either of Manuel Lanzini or Lucas Paqueta then De Sart will have an even tougher job on his hands. Against such speed we can see him getting in a spot of bother with the referee over the 90 minutes.
Draw
While West Ham’s European performances have been impressive on paper, the truth of the matter is they’ve barely been tested and Gent’s journey to this stage has been far tougher. They’re also scoring more goals than the Hammers but it looks like Moyes has finally, except for that 1-5 loss at home to Newcastle, shorn up that Iron’s defence.
We see Gent having the majority of the chances here but West Ham’s experience against the higher calibre of sides in the Premier League should see them weathering the storm and earning a draw, taking a finely-balanced first tie back to London where they’ll be confident of getting the job done in the second leg next week.
