Plymouth to Win
Well over 70,000 fans will be heading to Wembley on Sunday for the Papa Johns Trophy final as Plymouth and Bolton battle it out to claim the 2023 EFL Cup. Bolton have appeared in two of these finals, way back in the late ’80s, but this will be a debut at this stage in this competition for The Pilgrims.
However, everything indicates it will be a winning one. They’re in sensational form and are top of League One heading into the weekend but could be down to second come kick off on Sunday with the rest of the league playing on Saturday.
Sunday 3pm: Bolton v Plymouth
2023 Papa Johns Trophy Final
TV: Sky Sports Football
They’ve won four of their last five and have built their season on close-to-perfect home form. They’re away from Home Park here, obviously, but their away record is pretty decent as well with 28 points taken from 19 games.
This game has come at the wrong time for Bolton. They had lost just two of 17 games, winning 12 of those, in all competitions before a run of two losses and two defeats in their last four. The Devon side have the momentum and the form so It’s all pointing towards a Plymouth Win inside the 90.
Both Teams to Score? No
It will most likely be a Plymouth win with a clean sheet as well. These two have faced each other five times in the last three years with four Argyle victories, one draw and Bolton failing to register a goal in any of those games. The Pilgrims only have a mid-table defence (41 conceded in 38) but they’ve kept two clean sheets against their opponents this term already so it’s got to be Both Teams To Score? No.

Under 2.5 Goals
Bolton actually have a far superior defensive record (31 conceded in 38) but Argyle have scored the second-most goals in the third tier (67 in 38) but this is a final and it will be tight. Argyle have scored more than two goals just once in their last eight.
For Bolton’s part, have had Over 2.5 Goals twice in their last seven, but they’ve only scored six goals in that time. I’m expecting 1-0 or 2-0 to Plymouth so we’ll take Under 2.5 Goals.
Ryan Hardie to Score Anytime
The man who’s been the most prolific for the Pilgrims this season is Scottish striker Ryan Hardie. He’s bagged 13 goals in 38 appearances down on the English South Coast and is ticking along at 0.54 goals per 90 minutes played.
He scored in Plymouth’s 2-0 win over The Trotters at Home Park earlier in the season (he has a knack for scoring the final goal of games, by the way) and is on spot kicks. He’s got three in his last seven so the stats are saying it’s about time he bagged another one. So, at the prices, it has to be Hardie to Score Anytime.
