Euro 2024 qualifier: Republic of Ireland v France
Monday, March 27: 7.45pm
TV: RTE2/ ViaPlay
The Republic of Ireland kickoff their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign on Monday as they welcome group leaders France to the Aviva Stadium. Les Blues will be riding high after demolishing the Netherlands 4-0 on Friday, and Stephen Kenny’s men will have it all to do if they’re to come away with the all-important three points.
France to Win
No matter what way you slice it, the Republic of Ireland just are not in a position to win this game. That’s not to say that they won’t hold up slightly better than the Netherlands did though.
The style in which Ireland play is centred around playing against bigger and better sides – feeding off scraps, while making it difficult for the opposition to run up a big scoreline.
All things considered, France will win, but it won’t be in the same demoralising fashion as the Dutch.
Under 3.5 Goals
Harkening back to the way Ireland are set up to play, there’s an emphasis on defending well when the run of play is entirely against them. Between Nathan Collins, Seamus Coleman and Matt Doherty there’s enough experience and quality in that department.
We’re not expecting the hosts to put many (or even any) beyond Mike Maignan, but not allowing ourselves to rule it out. Excluding Ireland’s last two fixtures they’ve seen Under 3.5 Goals in nine of their last ten matches.
Player To Have Two or More Shots on Target – Kylian Mbappe
It wouldn’t be a Bet Builder without this man involved. He notched himself two goals and an assist against the Netherlands on Friday, but more importantly – he had four shots on target on five attempts.
An absolute talisman who will cause bedlam for the Irish defence. He’s managed to get 31 goals so far in club competitions alone this season, and if ever there was a man to find the target and test Gavin Bazunu out, Mbappe is the man to do it.

Away Team Under 1.5 Cards
Despite the fact France got three of their defenders and Adrien Rabiot booked on Friday night – we shouldn’t get our hopes up about seeing this feat repeated.
France have a tendency to get less cards against them when they play against lesser opponents. They were booked only once against Poland, not at all against Morocco, Tunisia or Australia at the World Cup.
Ireland absolutely fit in with those sides in terms of quality, and we’d expect to see similar numbers in terms of bookings here.
Corner Match Bet – France
The Republic of Ireland will be up against the wall for most of this game trying to feed off of counter-attacking opportunities. The French will play with unrelenting attacks and create opportunities for corners.
France have had less corners than their opponents in every game stretching back to their World Cup quarter-final against England, however, before this point they had the most corners in four consecutive matches.
Player To be Shown A Card – John Egan
Egan has found himself in the referee’s book on more than one occasion this season. In fact, in the Championship alone he’s had eight yellow cards, and one red. That bumps up to ten yellow cards if you go factoring in the FA Cup appearances.
He’s only been booked twice for Ireland in his last 16 appearances though!
That said, with the amount of pressure the hosts will be under, he looks a strong candidate to carry that club form in here against the likes of Mbappe and co.
