England to Win

What a season 2022/23 has been for England. They’ve had a World Cup quarter-final, a Nations League relegation and now they’re looking to qualify for Euro 2024. Their campaign for the latter got underway with a 2-1 win in Naples on Thursday. It was classic Three Lions: first half good, second half not so good.

But credit where it’s due, they held on and didn’t collapse entirely as they so often have against a top nation in the past. England’s opponents on Sunday are Ukraine, a country with far more on its mind than football. This is their first match in qualifying and they haven’t played since last September. Will that help or hinder them here? Either way, it’s got to be England to Win here.

Over 3.5 Goals

Ukraine certainly have plenty of recent experience of facing teams from the United Kingdom and Ireland to draw upon if nothing else. Sunday’s away side played eight matches last year and only two of them were not against Scotland (three), Ireland (two) or Wales (one). However, the concern here is that their only wins in their last five were both against Armenia, who are a lot weaker than the other three nations they faced.

They also took a 4-0 beating when they last played England, back at Euro 2020, and that took place in Rome rather than at Wembley (unlike England’s other matches at the supposedly neutral tournament). While the Ukrainians picked up a 1-1 draw on their last visit to England, it was so long ago that the recently fired Everton manager scored for the Three Lions.

Gareth Southgate’s boys also have a very strong record when facing nations currently outside the top 25 in the FIFA Rankings at Wembley (Ukraine are 26th). They have 17 victories and two draws from these games so there’s no reason to expect anything other than three more points for England.

And as 12 of their last 13 wins in this type of fixture were by at least three goals, the home side should cruise through this match by a handsome margin. Ukraine lost 3-0 in Scotland last year so they can certainly ship four goals here to cover a flutter on Over 3.5 Goals.

Both Teams to Score? No

England very rarely concede in fixtures when hosting teams outside the elite at Wembley. They have allowed just three goals in the last 19 such matches, and just one in the 13 which have occurred in the last four years. One team failing to score was also a theme for Ukraine in 2022. Although they only drew a blank in three of their eight matches, one team ended with nil in all but two of them.

The presence of Harry Maguire in the Three Lions’ backline means the potential for pratfalls remains constant. But with England so defensively solid at home against teams of similar standard to Ukraine, take ‘no’ in the Both Teams to Score market.

Under 10.5 Corners

If you ever want a corner bet selection in international football, always aim low. England have played 21 matches since the start of last season, and only five of them hit double figures for corners, with just one going above 10.

Reaching the mark is a little more common for Ukraine, as it occurred in half of their eight matches last year. There were only five when these teams last met, though, so I wouldn’t expect too many here. Under 10.5 Corners looks safe enough with England’s record in the last couple of years.

Over 2.5 Ukraine Cards

As well as few corners, there were no cards when England beat Ukraine in July 2021. Yet if you look at the latter’s matches last year, you’ll find the booking totals were: seven, four, five (all for Ukrainians in that one), five, seven, two, four and five. They’ve got more cards than Clintons.

The visitors are now led by caretaker manager Ruslan Rotan, after previous boss Oleksandr Petrakov left earlier this year. Whether they’ll draw as many bookings remains to be seen, but the last seven visitors to Wembley have collected an average of three yellow cards, as have the last two teams to face England (France and Italy). Ukraine should pick up Over 2.5 Cards too.
