France v Netherlands, Friday 19:45 TV: Viaplay Sports 1
France to win
Even though they lost the World Cup final, France probably remain the best team in the world and will still be smarting after December’s thrilling defeat against Argentina. Given that loss was their most recent game, it will be interesting to see whether they suffer from a hangover.
The Netherlands, on the other hand, also suffered an agonising penalty shootout defeat against Argentina in their most recent game and may be experiencing a World Cup hangover of their own. The Dutch also come into this game under a new manager, with Ronald Koeman taking over from Louis Van Gaal.
Both sides will be looking for a response which should make for an entertaining game. France, however, possess talent in all areas of the pitch and should just about enough to cope with the Dutch, especially with reports of a virus hitting their camp.
An opening-day defeat will not spell disaster for Koeman’s side, who should still be hugely confident of a top two place in Group B, with the greatest of respect to Ireland and Greece.
Both teams to score: Yes
France boast some of the best young defenders in the world, but they still look shaky at the back. They managed just one clean sheet in seven games at the World Cup, while they also conceded in five of their six Nations League games earlier in 2022.
The Dutch, meanwhile, scored 10 goals in five games at the World Cup, and scored 14 goals in their six Nations League games.
They have scored in each of their last 20 games in all competitions, last failing to score in their 2-0 defeat to the Czech Republic at Euro 2020.
They will be confident of scoring against the French and Didier Deschamps’ side may have to score twice if they are to win on Friday night.
Fresh from his World Cup final heroics, Kylian Mbappe has been named the new France captain ahead of this Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.
Mbappe’s World Cup final hat-trick capped off a magnificent tournament in Qatar that saw him score eight goals and claim the Golden Boot award.
Mbappe has scored 17 goals in his last 16 competitive appearances for France and is probably the best player in the world at present.
He has also scored 31 goals in 33 appearances for PSG this season and is good value to continue his hot streak against the Dutch.
Jurrien Timber to be shown a card
Jurrien Timber commits by far the most fouls of any Dutch player. The Ajax defender averaged 4.3 fouls per game during the World Cup, far more than the second-highest average (Denzel Dumfries on 3.4 fouls per game).
No other Dutch player averaged more than two fouls per game at the tournament.
He has also committed the most fouls of any Ajax player this season, and topped the foul count during the Netherlands’ Nations League campaign last year.
Playing against a rapid and tricky French attack featuring Mbappe, Timber is likely to commit a similar number of fouls on Friday night and it would not be a surprise if he picked up a yellow card.
