Thursday’s going to be yet another busy day of horses and football. We’ve got Cheltenham during the day which ends about 5.40 – then we’ve got five minutes to chuck the kettle on and sit right back down for the football that lasts until 10pm.

Sound like a plan? Well, let’s get down to it, then…

Shishkin to Win the Ryanair Chase

Unlike Ryanair themselves, Shishkin knows where his landing gear is. And you might be familiar with the name in question – that’s because at one time or the other, he was the best two-mile chaser on the planet.

You might well ask why he’s moving up in trip over half a mile, and hilariously, he’s not taking the long way round like the sponsor of this race indicates – he’s just getting a touch older.

After pulling up in last year’s Queen Mother mud fest, he appeared to be a shadow of his former self until he arrived back on-course a few weeks back and looked, once again, like the best chaser going to the Festival.

And while I’d normally be sceptical about any horse repeating that form again so quickly, the race itself lacks real depth and if he’s at 70%, he’ll win with something in hand.

Betis v Man United – Betis and the Draw

Man United have the job done from the first leg and wasting resources for a trip to Spain sounds like something many of us have been guilty of when visiting the Costa del Sol. Erik Ten Hag is a pragmatist and knows he has plenty of squad depth behind the headlines and it should be more than enough to see them advance to the next round.

But United’s actual intention to win the game is questionable at best and this indicated by their price, so always take a home side determined to at least put up a credible performance in Europe when well-behind on aggregate.

Arsenal v Sporting – Sporting and the Draw

Sporting’s abysmal start to the season had many pencilling this in as a clean-up job for the Premier League leaders, but that was never going to be the case. The club have turned a corner since November, winning all but three of their games – two of those disappointments coming against Benfica and Sporting and now look revitalised again.

People often underestimate how mentally taxing keeping up in a title race is, especially when your players aren’t used to it. So this is a real issue for Arsenal because their focus is elsewhere. They may well avoid disaster here, but I don’t see them winning the game as selection processes get even more scrutinised during the run-in.

West Ham v AEK Larnaca – West Ham -1

Hang on, you didn’t think I’d be totally anti-British here, did you?

Shishkin is trained by Nicky Henderson for God’s sake. And while I’m inherently Irish and fancy the English sides to slightly embarrass themselves in the football this week, the only thing weaker than my tea of choice is my faith in Cypriot football. West Ham were awful in Larnaca and still won comfortably. This will be a cake-walk for the Hammers.
