Arsenal v Sporting (8pm)
TV: BT Sport 2
Double Chance: Sporting Lisbon & Draw
Arsenal do not boast the best record in Europe under Mikel Arteta, especially at home. Arteta’s side have failed to win four of their last five home knockout games in the competition, bowing out after failing to beat Villarreal and Olympiacos at home in previous seasons.
They are obviously a different animal now but have far bigger fish to fry than the Europa League. With Arsenal’s title race at full-tilt, it stands to reason that Arteta may see the Europa League as an unnecessary distraction and may not feel too disappointed if they exit the competition prematurely.
They certainly won’t have things their own way against a Sporting side that more than held their own last week in Lisbon and avoided defeat on their last visit to North London, when they drew 1-1 at Tottenham in the Champions League last October.
Sporting are well off the pace in the Portuguese title race but recently avoided defeat at runaway league leaders Benfica, while they ran riot at Midtjylland in the previous round of the Europa League. Don’t be surprised if they give Arsenal a scare.
Both Teams to Score
Arsenal have kept the joint-most clean sheets in the Premier League this season, recording an impressive 12 shutouts in 27 games. However, nine of those clean sheets have come away from home, with only three coming at the Emirates.
For whatever reason, Arsenal have leaked goals at the Emirates this season, conceding 16 of 25 goals at home. They have not conceded at home in the Europa League so far but are facing their toughest competition to date, with Sporting averaging more than two goals per game in the league.
While Arsenal have struggled to keep clean sheets at home, they have had absolutely no problem putting the ball in the back of the net. Arteta’s side have failed to score in just one home game all season – in a 0-0 draw with Newcastle – and have scored 34 goals in 13 league games at the Emirates this season at a rate of almost three per game.
It is highly likely that they will breach the Sporting defence at least once.

Bukayo Saka to Score Anytime
Bukayo Saka has been one of the standout players in this excellent Arsenal side, but he has now failed to score in each of his last three games.
With Eddie Nketiah out injured and Gabriel Jesus only returning from a long-term injury layoff, Saka remains one of Arsenal’s main goal threats and can make a difference against Sporting on Thursday.
He has scored 10 goals in the Premier League this season, with six of those efforts coming at the Etihad. Almost all of his goals have made a vital impact on Arsenal’s season, with all ten efforts either giving Arsenal the lead or drawing them level.
He can provide another vital contribution to Arsenal’s season here.
Over 9.5 Corners
Unsurprisingly, Arsenal’s corner average is amongst the highest in the Premier League. The Gunners win an average of 5.9 corners per game in the league and have won a whopping 56 corners in their last seven games in all competitions at a rate of eight corners per game.
They are likely to win their fair share on Thursday night, especially if things don’t go their way and they are forced to ramp up the pressure. There is an excellent chance that we will see ten corners or more at the Emirates.
