Tottenham v Chelsea, Sunday 13:30 TV: Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Premier League
Tottenham to win
The problem with trying to predict Chelsea’s matches is that their results must turn for the better eventually. In their last six league games, they’ve scored three goals from 10.7 expected. Will their results improve this week? Next week? The 12th of never?
Tottenham’s form is generally good, though they’re always capable of losing 4-1 at Leicester after taking the lead. They had a similar result from 2-0 up at Manchester City last month too.
Their performance in big games at home have been better than the results in the last year or so though. The underlying numbers suggest they should’ve won four and drawn two of the last six visits from the Premier League big boys.
With that in mind and Chelsea struggling to score, let’s take Tottenham to win.
Under 2.5 goals
Chelsea should really have scored about five goals more than they have this season, based on the chances at least. To spend a bajillion dollars and not come back from the shops with a decent striker seems like lunacy.
Their wastefulness helps explain why they’re fifth bottom in the over 2.5 goals table for the season. But going back further, their big games on the road haven’t seen much action. Only three of the Blues’ 11 away games against fellow clubs from the big six in the last three seasons have featured at least three goals.
And it’s a similar story when Tottenham get the better of one of the top sides at home. They have won seven such matches since the start of 2019/20 and kept a clean sheet in six of them. Similarly, only once in those games did they score more than twice. Everything is pointing towards there being under 2.5 goals here.
Tottenham and Chelsea have been two of the Premier League’s more corner-heavy clubs this term. Only Everton and Newcastle have played more matches in which there were at least 12 than the latter, with Spurs only one game behind them.
The last three clashes have all paid out on over 12.5 corners, with an average of 14 across those games. Such games are extreme, though, so we’ll reign it in a touch and settle for over 11.5 on Sunday.
Over 3.5 cards
The two teams have been pretty well behaved in recent times, with only seven yellow cards shown across the previous three meetings. With Stuart Attwell running this one, we can perhaps expect a return to the five yellow cards this fixture featured two years ago though.
Attwell is the Premier League’s most card friendly whistler, averaging 3.6 per match. These teams bring something out of him too: he’s averaged 3.8 yellows when officiating Spurs and 3.9 for Chelsea. Three of his last four matches with the latter featured five bookings and the one which didn’t had a sending off (of one Kalidou Koulibaly).
Expect refereeing fireworks and over 3.5 cards here.
