Wednesday 8pm: RB Leipzig v Manchester City
TV: BT Sport 1, BT Sport Ultimate
Manchester City to Win
Manchester City have faltered in the Premier League recently, dropping 10 points since the turn of the year. However, they still retain an excellent chance of winning a third league title in a row and still look the strongest contender to win the Champions League, which remains their greatest ambition.
City have been getting closer and closer to winning the Champions League in recent seasons and have never been more than a Pep Guardiola meltdown away from winning the competition. Those meltdowns usually come later in the competition, however, meaning City should experience plain sailing against Leipzig over two legs.
Leipzig, who beat Real Madrid 3-2 during the group stages, will provide a stern test for City, especially on Wednesday, but Guardiola’s side have won each of the last five away ties that they have played in the round-of-16 and are unlikely to stumble in Germany. It’s got to be City to Win.
Riyad Mahrez to Score Anytime
Erling Haaland has provided the bulk of City’s goals this season, scoring a hugely impressive 32 goals in 31 appearances. However, the Norwegian striker has not been as prolific as late, especially away from home.
Haaland has failed to score in five of City’s last eight games, meaning Guardiola may be forced to look elsewhere for goals on Wednesday night. Riyad Mahrez has scored 11 goals in all competitions this season, the best record of any City player after Haaland, and has stepped up with important goals for City since the World Cup, most notably in the wins over Chelsea and Tottenham.
Mahrez has scored twice in the Champions League this season and offers excellent value to do so again in Germany. So, at a nice price, we’ll take Mahrez to Score Anytime.
Erling Haaland to Have 2 or More Shots on Target
Haaland may be experiencing something of a slow-down in his remarkable goal scoring, but he has still managed to score five goals in his last five games. Haaland is also returning to Germany, where he enjoyed success against almost every opponent he faced.
He averages 3.8 shots per game in the Champions League for City this season and 3.5 in all competitions and Haaland is decent value to Have 2 or More Shots on Target on Wednesday, even if he doesn’t manage to score.
Inter Milan come into this game 15 points off Napoli in the Serie A title race, yet the Italian side are still in relatively good form. Inter are unbeaten in their last five games, recently beating local rivals AC Milan 1-0.
Porto, on the other hand, come into this game on the back of 10 straight wins in all competitions and will fancy their chances of getting something at the San Siro. However, the home side appear to have discovered some defensive solidity in recent weeks and should have just about enough to take an important lead into the second leg so it’s an Inter Win here.
Under 2.5 Goals
Whatever the result on Wednesday night, it is likely to be low-scoring. Inter have conceded just one goal in their last four games, while seven of their 12 games since the World Cup have seen two goals or fewer. Inter also managed clean sheets in three of their six group games, including two of their three home games.
Porto, meanwhile, have conceded just twice in their last 11 games in all competitions, with seven of those games seeing two goals or fewer. Wednesday’s first leg is likely to be a cagey tactical battle and is unsurprisingly odds-on to be low-scoring with Under 2.5 Goals.
