Liverpool v Real Madrid, Tuesday 8pm
TV: BT Sport 1

The Draw

Liverpool seem to have discovered form at just the right time. Jurgen Klopp’s side are enduring a campaign to forget, but they have now recorded back-to-back 2-0 wins over Everton and Newcastle to reignite their chances of finishing in the top four.

The Reds picked up just one point from their opening four games of the year, but the fact that they are just seven points off fourth-placed Tottenham with two games in hand should give them a real boost.

Despite Liverpool’s obvious failing this season, they have still be relatively solid at Anfield, where they have lost just once in all competitions, and the famous ground may inspire them on once again here.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, have hardly had a year to remember so far. The Spanish and European champions have dropped eight points since the turn of the year and are currently eight points behind bitter rivals Barcelona in the Spanish title race.

They have, however, won their last four games in all competitions and are unbeaten in their last six games against Liverpool, including last season’s Champions League final.

They will be confident of beating Liverpool at the Bernabeu in three weeks’ time and won’t be too disappointed with a draw.

Vinicius Jr. to Score Anytime

Vinicius Jr. scored the only goal when Real Madrid triumphed over Liverpool in Paris last May, and the Brazilian forward has gone from strength to strength since.

Vinicius has scored 16 goals in all competitions, including four in the Champions League, and is just six goals off his career best for a single season in February.

He is fresh from scoring a brace in Real Madrid’s Club World Cup final win over Al Hilal and has scored four goals in his last five games in all competitions.

Liverpool may have kept back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since October, but the Reds remain incredibly frail at the back.

They have already conceded more league goals than they did last season with 16 games left to play, while they have managed just 12 clean sheets in 34 games in all competitions.

It stands to reason that Real Madrid will score on Tuesday and Vinicius is good value to do so.

Virgil van Dijk to Attempt 70 or More Passes

Liverpool’s ability to keep the ball has been largely unaffected by their struggles this season. Klopp’s side average 59.5% possession in the league, the second-highest average behind Manchester City.

They will likely shade possession on Tuesday night, with Virgil Van Dijk likely to see a lot of the ball.

The Dutch defender completes an average of 78.3 passes per game in the league, the highest of any Liverpool player. Van Dijk completes 90% of the passes he makes, meaning that he attempts an average of 87 per game.

He may not reach such lofty figures in this game, but he should at least reach 70.

Real Madrid to Have the Most Cards

Real Madrid and Liverpool boast the best disciplinary records in Spain and England respectively, but Liverpool’s record is considerably better than Tuesday night’s opponents.

Liverpool have picked up 24 yellow cards and one red card in 22 league games this season, while Real Madrid have collected 37 yellow cards and one red card in the same number of games.

Madrid also boast the best record in the Champions League, collecting just five bookings in six games, compared to Liverpool’s record of eight bookings in six games.

Tuesday’s first leg is unlikely to see a flurry of yellow cards, but considering Real Madrid are away from home, they are likely to be on the defensive and are the better bet to pick up more cards.
