Newcastle to Win
The Eddie Howe derby – a contender for the least ferocious title of a rivalry to ever exist on this earth. And yet, here we are…
Newcastle have lost just a single game all year – fewer than any other side in the league including table-toppers Arsenal.
They’re floating on a wave of euphoria (and defensive solidity). But can Eddie Howe put aside personal ties to just manage a game he should win, or does he do a Pep Guardiola, overthink a relatively easy task and risk capsizing the entire movement he’s built up?
Not to build the hype – and I was one of those Howe deniers for the longest time because he looked more like a PE teacher than a man capable of sitting in a press conference – but they’re genuinely a good side. The progression from good to consistently beating the sides you should is supposed to take years, and yet…
They’ve drawn four of their last five games with their lone win coming against Fulham, but Bournemouth are now the worst team in the league and they can get back to winning ways here.
Under 2.5 Goals
Newcastle have conceded 12 goals all season. Twelve. That’s five fewer than any other side and they’ve played a game more than Arsenal, who are second in question in this regard.
Generally that gets offset by a shyness in front of goal, but their 34 goals are just two fewer than Manchester United as well.
That being said, their blueprint is recent times is to win by smaller margins and that’s clear given their recent form. There’s been three goals total in their last five Premier League games, while Bournemouth themselves have hit the overs just once in their last six.
Half-Time – The Draw
Bournemouth were shipping goals in the first half on-stop post-World Cup. Kai Havertz scored after sixteen minutes, Mount after twenty-four, then Ayew after 19, Eze after 36. Casemiro scored in the first twenty minutes at Old Trafford and Ivan Toney netted before half-time, too.
That’s clearly been spoken about because the goals are coming later, now. A big effort to press against Forest and Brighton resulted in late concessions – inside the last ten minutes in both instances – so Newcastle may need to be patient.
Kieran Trippier to Attempt 70 or More Passes
Of all 20 Premier League clubs, only Brentford and Forest keep less possession at home than the Cherries.
Newcastle are slowly moving towards a possession-based approach and Kieran Trippier is central to everything they do when on the ball. He is the only player to have amassed seventy passes this season for Newcastle, and is the only player to manage it away from home thus far.
But this is a scenario that should see him get a season-high in touches, so take the price.
