Saturday, February 11: 12.30pm: West Ham v Chelsea TV: BT Sport
The Draw
Chelsea may have spent hundreds of millions of pounds during the January transfer window, but they did not look much improved during their 0-0 draw with Fulham last week.
It will take time for all of their new signings to gel and it will not be long before the pressure on Graham Potter really starts to mount if the Blues don’t start picking up wins.
Chelsea have won just one of their six league games in 2023, while they have won just two of their last 12 games in the league thanks to unconvincing home victories over Bournemouth and Crystal Palace. Frankly, that is the form of a team in danger of relegation.
West Ham, on the other hand, have won just one of their last nine league games and currently find themselves perilously close to the relegation zone. Potter’s side have won just a third of their Premier League games this season, while the Irons have won less than 25% of theirs.
Neither side knows how to win at present, so a draw looks by far the most likely result.
Under 1.5 West Ham cards
West Ham boast one of the best disciplinary records in the Premier League, picking up just 27 cards in 21 games to date. Only Manchester City, Leicester, and Liverpool boast a better disciplinary record than David Moyes’ side.
The Hammers’ are particularly clean at the London Stadium where they have picked up just 13 cards in 10 league games.
They have received just eight cards in the six league games they have played since the World Cup, while they have received one card or fewer in 13 of their 21 league outings.
Jarrod Bowen is not having his best season by any stretch of the imagination, but he did pop up with two crucial goals in the pivotal win over fellow relegation rivals Everton last month.
Bowen has only scored four times in the league this season, but that hasn’t been for lack of trying.
The English forward averages 2.1 shots per game, the second-most of any West Ham player after Lucas Paqueta, who has played significantly fewer minutes than Bowen.
He is decent value to land a shot on target against a Chelsea side that faces an average of 11.2 shots per game.
Enzo Fernandez to attempt 70 or more passes
Enzo Fernandez made a relatively quiet start to life at Stamford Bridge for a man who arrived for a British record fee, but the Argentinian midfielder will only get better in the coming weeks.
Fernandez kept things ticking over for Chelsea against Fulham, making 75 passes on his Premier League debut.
He also averaged 95 passes per game for Benfica in the Portuguese league, which is perhaps less impressive since Benfica dominate most of the games they play in a division made up of far weaker teams than in England’s top flight.
Having said that, Chelsea will almost certainly dominate the ball against West Ham, meaning Fernandez is likely to break the 70-pass ceiling once again.
