Wednesday 8pm: Man United v Leeds
TV: Sky Sports Premier League

If Manchester United aren’t careful, they’re going to find themselves in the title race. If they win here, they’ll draw level with their cousins from across town and within five points of leaders Arsenal (albeit having played more games). With the Gunners hosting Manchester City next Wednesday (15th) meaning at least one will drop points, United’s double header with struggling Leeds – they travel to Elland Road on Sunday – might’ve arrived at the perfect time.

Jesse Marsch’s side might have won at Anfield this season but it’s a bigger surprise that other teams haven’t also won at Anfield the way Liverpool are playing. Leeds are on a seven game run without a victory, the longest in the division, and they sacked manager Jesse Marsch on Monday as a result.

Manchester United -1

His exit has looked on the cards for a while, and their fans don’t seem in the least but upset that ‘Yank Lampard’ has got the boot. It’s a huge ask for their side to respond with a win here though.

If there’s one thing in Leeds’ favour, it’s that Casemiro is suspended following his red card against Crystal Palace on Saturday. Manchester United have lost five league games so far this season and the Brazilian only played more than half an hour in one of them. His impact has been immense.

But they didn’t have him for the last two seasons and aside from a goalless draw at Leeds in April 2021, they have generally swept the Whites aside with goals galore. The other three meetings since the summer of 2020 have ended 6-2, 5-1 and 4-2 in favour of the Red Devils.

The last 13 matches at Old Trafford have ended in home wins, 10 of them by at least two goals. With Leeds in wretched form, that sequence should continue which will enable Man United to overcome the handicap.

Over 2.5 Goals

Leeds are such an unpredictable side this season. They might have the second worst away record in the division, yet they’ve scored at least twice in four of their games on the road, the joint-sixth most of any club.

They’ve also netted in their three heavy defeats to their Mancunian rivals in the last three years, and only Fulham have played more matches in which both teams scored in 2022/23.

As such, a bet on that market or over 2.5 goals looks a safe selection. Let’s take the latter as the Red Devils have the joint-best home defensive record in the Premier League this term.

Bruno Fernandes to Score or Assist

Bruno Fernandes loves playing Leeds. He has scored six goals and provided two assists in his four matches against them, making them his favourite Premier League opponent.

Even when he drew a blank in their 2021 stalemate, the Portuguese midfielder had the most shots and created the most chances. With a record like that, Fernandes is the stand-out candidate to score or assist.

Under 9.5  Corners

When these sides first met following Leeds’ long-awaited promotion, they went corner crazy. In Manchester United’s 6-2 win there were 24, the joint-most in any Premier League game since the start of 2020/21, and both teams hit double figures which is equally rare.

But there have only been 23 corners across the three clashes since, that sort of rate is more normal for these clubs, whose games have averaged a shade fewer than 10 this season. We should be good for under 9.5 here.

Under 2.5 Cards

Simon Hooper is the man-in-the-middle on Wednesday night, and he’s among the least card-heavy referees in the Premier League. Three of his last five matches have featured a maximum of two cards.

The previous meeting of these teams suggests Hooper would have to up his game, as there were nine yellow cards (despite the first of them being shown in the 54th minute). However, the last two clashes at Old Trafford saw just four in total, and while the Roses rivalry can always throw up a brawl, this referee will likely keep his cards in his pocket for as long as possible. Take the under 2.5 option.
