Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid, Wednesday 8pm
TV: Viaplay Sports, La Liga TV
A place in the Copa del Rey semi-finals is on the line when Real Madrid host bitter city rivals Atletico on Thursday night. With an average of 5.6 bookings over their last five games at both grounds we’ve decided to look for value in the Card Betting markets for will be the second Madrid derby of the season so far.
Atletico have collected 44 yellow cards in La Liga this season along with two straight red cards and three reds as the result of two yellows. It seems like a high average but Mallorca with 68 yellows and two reds are running away with the worst disciplinary record. Real, on the other hand, are the nice guys of La Liga with just 25 cards. This one is always fiery however and we’re looking at the most likely players from both sides to have their names taken down by the man in black.
Koke to be Shown a Card
While it’s Saul Niguez who currently has the most yellow cards for the Colchoneros at six, it’s his midfield partner Koke who makes our list first off. Granted he’s only picked up two yellow cards this season but Saul has only been coming off the bench of late while it’s been Koke who’s been deployed to sit in front of the back four and offer some additional protection.
There’s no real sugar-coating what we’ve to tell you next: Koke absolutely hates Real Madrid. He’s a proper local boy and has been part of the Atletico setup since he was just eight years old. Since lining out for the senior side he’s faced off against Los Blancos on 34 occasions, winning 10, drawing 10 and losing 14 and has picked up 16 yellow cards over those games. That’s around a half card, on average, per game against Real Madrid. If anyone is going to be making a cynical foul here it’s our boy Koke and with 16 cards in 34 appearances against Real we’re getting some great value here for his price to be shown a card.
Eduardo Camavinga to be Shown a Card
For the Real candidates we’d be tempted by their French star Aurelien Tchouameni to pick up a card here. However, at the time of writing it’s unsure as to whether he’ll be fit enough to make it back in time for this game. He’s not picked up too many since signing for Real in fairness but we saw for France in the World Cup that when he comes up against the better players he’s every bit as good at the dark arts as the man he replaced – Casemiro.
We have to look at who’ll be playing in his stead, Eduardo Camavinga, who has picked up three cards over his six starts for Los Blancos. He’s going to be sitting in front of Antonio Rudiger and Eder Milito and we think here that his inexperience against a team with the guile of Atletico will lead to his name being taken over the 90 minutes. He’ll also be tasked with keeping the ball away from both Antoine Griezmann and Memphis.

Jose Gimenez to be Shown a Card
Jose Gimenez has missed the last three games for Atletico but should make a return to the starting XI here. He’s picked up five bookings for the visitors so far this season but over his last 26 games for both club and country he’s picked up a total of 10. He’s got quite a clean bill of health against Real, playing them 12 times since signing from in 2013 and has picked up just two bookings. Indeed, he’s been a bit of a good luck charm for the Colchoneros against Los Blancos, of those 12 games they’ve only lost three times.
It’s really his lack of discipline of late though that’s caught our eye, he’s been later into tackles and he’s going to be up against both Karim Benzema, who’s been in great form all season and either of Marcos Asensio and Federico Valverde so we could well be seeing his name being taken down too.
