Nottingham Forest vs Wolves

Both teams to Score

Nottingham Forest must be pleased with their return to club football following the World Cup. Steve Cooper’s side were outclassed at Old Trafford and saw a much-changed team hammered by Blackpool in the FA Cup, but they have also qualified for a League Cup quarter final and picked up four points from games against Chelsea and relegation rivals Southampton to move clear of the bottom three.

Wolves, meanwhile, have also taken four points from their three league games since the World Cup and were fully worth their 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the FA Cup on Saturday night. They have already shown signs of improvement under Julien Lopetegui and will be confident of reaching a League Cup semi-final when they take on Forest.

They have scored seven goals in five games under the Spanish manager and only failed to find the back of the net in a narrow defeat against an in-form Manchester United.

Forest, on the other hand, have conceded nine goals in their five games since the World Cup but have also scored in each of their last eight games at the City Ground in all competitions. There should be goals.

Daniel Podence to Score Anytime

Daniel Podence has proved a key player for Wolves since Lopetegui’s arrival, scoring goals in the vital win over Everton and the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa last week. The Portuguese winger is Wolves’ joint-top scorer in all competitions and one of just two players to score more than one league goal for the struggling club this season.

Podence’s goals have been worth five points to Wolves this season, with three of his four goals coming away from Molineux. He is not shy of scoring important goals on the road and could do so against Forest.

Kevin de Bruyne, Man City

Southampton vs Manchester City

Manchester City -2

Nathan Jones has, if possible, made Southampton even worse since taking over from Ralph Hasenhuttl during the season. Southampton have lost four league games on the spin since Jones’ appointment in November and are now rooted to the bottom of the table, three points adrift of safety.

Southampton have lost six straight league games, including their last three home games, and appear to have no chance against a Man City side that dismantled Chelsea in the FA Cup on Sunday.

City also appear to have renewed their love affair with the League Cup after failing to win the competition for the first time since 2017 last season. They have already dumped Chelsea and Liverpool out of the League Cup en-route to the last eight and should have no problems swatting this dreadful Southampton outfit aside.

City won 4-0 in a league fixture at the Etihad early in the season and it wouldn’t be too surprising if they replicated that score at St. Mary’s.

Julian Alvarez to Score Anytime

Julian Alvarez made a goalscoring return to the Man City starting line-up when he dispatched a penalty in the 4-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday. The Argentinian striker had not started for City since his World Cup heroics but now has minutes and a goal under his belt.

With City facing a Manchester Derby at Old Trafford just three days after Wednesday’s League Cup game at Southampton, it wouldn’t be surprising if Pep Guardiola stuck with Alvarez up front and gave Erling Haaland even more of a rest. Alvarez has scored in his one League Cup appearance for City and may do so again on Wednesday night.
