Man United v Charlton
Manchester United -2
Manchester United have really made Old Trafford a fortress under Erik Ten Hag. United have won their last eight home games in all competitions and are without a defeat at Old Trafford in 10 games in a run stretching back to September when Real Sociedad won thanks to an extremely controversial penalty call in the Europa League.
United have played four home games since returning from the World Cup, scoring 11 and conceding just one in four comfortable victories. They will expect another comfortable victory against League One Charlton on Tuesday night night.
Charlton, incredibly, are the only London club left standing in the League Cup, but the English capital’s involvement in the competition should come to an end by full-time on Tuesday. Sitting in 12th in English football’s third tier, Charlton have made it this far largely thanks to penalty shootout heroics.
They have won on spot kicks in three of their four League Cup ties to date this season, but their run should come to a shuddering halt on Tuesday.
Marcus Rashford to Score Anytime
Like United, Rashford is enjoying an incredible run of form at Old Trafford. The United forward has scored in seven consecutive home games, matching a record set by Wayne Rooney during the 2011/2012 season. He has scored in each of United’s five games since the World Cup and has been their best player by far in recent games.
Rashford has scored in each of United’s two League Cup outings this season, netting against both Aston Villa and Burnley at Old Trafford. It wouldn’t be at all surprising if he extended his excellent scoring streak on Tuesday.
Newcastle vs Leicester
TV: Sky Sports Main Event (8pm)
Both teams to Score, No
Leicester travel to St. James’ Park just two weeks after Newcastle strolled to a 3-0 victory at Leicester in the league. Brendan Rodgers’ side have endured a difficult return to Premier League football after appearing to steady the ship prior to the World Cup.
The Foxes have lost all three league games since the World Cup, in stark contrast with an excellent run of results that saw them pick up 13 points from their six games before the World Cup to put some daylight between themselves and the bottom three.
Newcastle, on the other hand, have slightly stuttered in the race for the Champions League places, drawing 0-0 in consecutive games to offer an opportunity to the chasing pack below them. They were also defeated in the third round of the FA Cup at League One Sheffield Wednesday.
However, that defeat will matter very little if Newcastle are to secure Champions League football this season or even a League Cup trophy. They are without a defeat in 14 league games and have conceded just twice in their last nine league outings. Leicester, who have scored just one league goal since the return of club football, are unlikely to break them down on Tuesday.
Kieran Trippier Anytime Assist
Kieran Trippier has proved an exceptional buy since arriving at Newcastle last January.
The England full-back has recorded more assists than any other Newcastle player this season, recording four assists in the league and one in the League Cup. He also averages 2.6 key passes per game in the league this season, which is more than double that of Bruno Guimaraes, who boasts the second-best key pass average in the Newcastle squad. He is by far the most likely Newcastle player to set up a teammate against Leicester.
