Arsenal -1

I’m coming into this one on the back of a 21/1 winner earlier this week in Brentford v Liverpool – let’s hope we can do it again! The home side aren’t in great form, having won just one of their last six league matches and only three of their last 12. Oxford shouldn’t be in danger of relegation this season but the play-offs look a fair way off at present too.

Karl Robinson’s side reached this point by beating Woking and Exeter, so this will be a significantly more difficult assignment. The fact a below strength Crystal Palace knocked them out of the Carabao Cup at The Kassam Stadium in August does not bode well for their chances here.

Their main hope lies in the likelihood that Mikel Arteta will make wholesale changes rather than just swapping out one or two from his regular line up. Arsenal have averaged 0.9 changes to their starting line-up from game to game in the Premier League this season, the fewest in the division. Seven men have started every match while Martin Odegaard has only missed one, so there’s eight players there who should get the night off for starters.

They should have too much for a mid-table League One side, all the same. Palace won by two goals when at Oxford earlier this season so the Gunners can do likewise.

Both Teams to Score

Arsenal are unlikely to have things all their own way on Monday evening. The home side won’t go down without a fight.

Oxford have scored in all but two of their League One matches on their patch this season, and only drew a blank there twice in the whole of 2021/22.

The defence for the Arsenal reserve side we’ll likely see here haven’t been in sparkling form this season either. They were beaten 3-1 by Brighton in the Carabao Cup, and only kept one clean sheet in their three Europa League away matches.

The home fans should get a goal to cheer, so back both teams to score in this one.

Marquinhos to Score Anytime

While the Arsenal team isn’t easy to predict, it looks likely that Marquinhos – their 19-year-old Brazilian forward, not the Paris Saint-Germain defender – looks a certainty. Although he has had limited opportunities, he is in decent form. The former Sao Paulo player scored and assisted in Arsenal’s 2-1 Europa League win in Zurich, and he has made six goal contributions in five starts for the Gunners’ under-21 side too.

With a goal or assist every 75 minutes during his playing time for Arteta and the youth team in 2022/23, Marquinhos should find time to squeeze a goal in here.

Over 3.5 Cards

Oxford are currently the card kings of League One. Not so much for how many they’ve been shown themselves – eight teams have received more bookings – but for the total in their games. Matches featuring The U’s have averaged an incredible 4.7 yellow cards in 2022/23.

When Palace came calling in the League Cup, referee Peter Bankes booked eight players. While this shouldn’t be that extreme, David Coote (the man in black here) averages 3.4 cards per Premier League match, with Arsenal’s games featuring 3.9, so a selection of over 3.5 looks solid as a rock.

Under 11.5 Corners

But where cards look guaranteed, corners will be thin on the ground. Only three teams in the top flight average fewer per game in total than Arsenal – who clock in at 9.5 – while Oxford’s average of 10.1 is below par for League One.

Sorry to keep referring back to the Palace match, but the ‘Oxford vs Premier League teams’ cupboard is bare for other recent examples. On that occasion, the visitors won the corner count 6-0 and this should follow a similar pattern. There’s no need to cut it too fine, under 11.5 will suit us perfectly.
