7:45pm: AC Milan v Roma

AC Milan to Win

AC Milan have only played once since the return of club football, but it could hardly have gone much better for the reigning Italian champions. Stefano Pioli’s side recorded a fairly comfortable 2-1 win over Salernitana, but it was their city rivals who provided the real boost.

Inter Milan’s 1-0 win over Napoli helped keep AC Milan’s slim title hopes alive, cutting the gap at the top to five points.

They need to keep their title-chasing momentum going against Jose Mourinho’s Roma on Sunday night, who need a win themselves to remain in the hunt for the Champions League places.

Roma are currently three points off Inter in fourth but have been too inconsistent this season, dropping 18 points in their opening 16 games. AC Milan should keep their title charge alive at the San Siro.

Over 2.5 Goals

The vast majority of AC Milan games this season have seen three goals or more. Of their 16 Serie A games to date this season, 11 have seen three or more goals.

Even their goal difference suggests that they win most games 2-1, with an average of two goals scored per game and exactly one goal conceded.

On the other hand, just six of Roma’s 16 league games have seen three goals or more this season.

Mourinho’s side have not been involved in a significant number of high-scoring games and have only scored 19 goals all season, but AC Milan’s somewhat leaky defence gives them hope of at least scoring at the San Siro.

8pm: Barcelona v Atletico Madrid

The Draw

Barcelona have not enjoyed a happy return from the World Cup. The Catalan giants have played two games since the return of club football and have been far from competitive in both of them, drawing at home against near neighbours Espanyol to cut their lead at the top of the table before stumbling over the line against Intercity in the Copa del Rey.

The World Cup break came at the worst possible moment for Barca, who won their last five league games before the break to establish a two-point lead at the top.

Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, were in desperate need of a break. Diego Simeone’s side had failed to win any of their five league and Champions League outings before the World Cup, losing three of those games.

The six-week break appears to have done them good as they have recorded back-to-back comfortable 2-0 wins in the league and cup since their return. Barca, who are without Robert Lewandowski through suspension, may see their status as league leaders come under serious threat when they travel to Madrid.

Ansu Fati to Score Anytime

Lewandowski’s absence underlines just how much Barca have been relying on the Polish striker’s goals. Lewandowski has scored 18 goals in 20 appearances since swapping Bayern for Barca last summer. Ousmane Dembele, Barca’s next-highest scorer, has managed six goals in 22 games, just one-third of Lewandowski’s total.

The Polish striker has scored more than 40% of Barca’s goals this season and they will need to find someone to replace his goals during his three-game suspension.

Ansu Fati stepped up to the plate in the cup to spare Barca’s blushes during the week and is arguably the most likely to do so in Madrid on Sunday.

Fati has scored three goals in three league starts, with the majority of his 15 league appearances coming from the bench. Only Lewandowski, Dembele, and Ferran Torres have scored more for Barca this season than Fati and he is good value to add to his tally on Sunday.
