Sheffield Wednesday v Newcastle, FA Cup Third Round Saturday, December 7: 6pm. TV: BBC
Newcastle to Win
In the space of a few months, the previous key cogs in Newcastle’s team have become nothing more than bench pieces as the Saudi money floods into St James’ Park. However, those bench pieces are still highly effective at what they do and can cause serious damage when called upon in the Premier League, let alone in cup games.
Eddie Howe can rotate here and still sort a result.
Both Teams to Score
This game isn’t just something you’d tee up because of a league table you found in a time capsule, either. It’s two form sides in England competing against each other – something you don’t always get this early in the competition. Newcastle have lost one game this season in all competitions – that’s the 2-1 loss at Anfield which only arrived in the 98th minute of the game.
Wednesday, for their part, have lost just once since the first week of September. That was a two-one defeat away at the league leaders Plymouth, falling to an injury time winner, too. Neither will sit back.
When put in the context of an up-and-coming superpower, I do often wonder if Chris Wood’s efficiency gets forgotten about. Throughout his entire career, Wood has found the net. And not just in big moments – he generally find the net in a lot of moments.
To be able to pull a fully-rested Kiwi into this starting XI against a side two divisions lower should cause the Owls some serious problems.
Michael Smith to Have Two or More Shots on Target
Not every free transfer works out as well as this one. Michael Smith is over double figures for the season now for Sheffield Wednesday, and it’s his relentlessness in front of goal that impresses me most.
He’s a physical being who understands he’s the focal point of the side and always takes it upon himself to try and find the key strike. Yes, this generally results in him shooting on sight, hence the leg. Oh, and he’s from Wallsend. Imagine that.
All prices are bang up to date with our snazzy widgets, while odds in copy are accurate at time of publishing but subject to change.
