Brentford v Liverpool, Monday, 17:30
TV: Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Premier League

Happy New Year! Did you have as good a weekend as Brentford and Liverpool? They both rounded off 2022 with victories on Friday night. But they did so in very different ways. Brentford actually scored themselves, for one thing. The Bees won 2-0 at West Ham, thanks to a goal and assist from Ivan Toney, while the misfiring Reds had the comedy stylings of Wout Faes to thank for their 2-1 defeat of Leicester.

Over the last six league games, Jurgen Klopp’s side have won more points while Thomas Frank’s team have lost fewer matches. There is unlikely to be much between them here.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

Double Chance: Brentford or Draw

Brentford have been better at home than their modest record suggests. According to expected goal stats they should’ve beaten Everton, Chelsea, Wolves and Tottenham but all four matches ended level. Even allowing for that, they’ve been better than Liverpool have on the road. While the Reds have won their last two league games away from Anfield, Spurs missed four clear-cut chances when losing 2-1 to Jurgen Klopp’s side and Aston Villa squandered three on Boxing Day in a 1-3 win for the visiting side

This fixture ended 3-3 last season, however, Liverpool will know what to expect from the bus stop in Hounslow this time. They appeared to have learned the lesson in the return match at Anfield in January, which ended 3-0 in their favour. But Brentford have a strong record against the Big Six clubs, with a higher points-per-game average against them than versus the other 13 teams in the division this season. Their price to avoid defeat against an erratic Reds side looks too good to ignore.

Over 2.5 goals & Both Teams to Score

Brentford and Liverpool have had very similar records regarding goals in their matches this season, both averaging a total of over three per game. However, they are both below their overall mark when home or away as appropriate here. If Mohamed Salah and Co. had packed their shooting boots when on the road, it might have been a different story. The Reds have scored 10 goals away from Anfield but have generated chances worth 14.1 expected goals. Darwin Nunez alone missed four big chances at Villa Park last Monday, showing he’s either destined to score here or a massive fraud, depending on your allegiances.

Brentford’s clean sheets at home this season might have come against teams above them in the table but with Liverpool creating opportunities aplenty while also allowing them, both teams should score with over 2.5 goals in total.

Corners: Over 11.5

Brentford and Liverpool’s respective matches have roughly had the same total of corners last season, yet when they met the combined score on the corner’s front was 20-2 to the Reds. The 11 Liverpool had at the Brentford Community Stadium was only topped by an away team four times in the other 379 Premier League matches in 2021/22.

This game should play out in similar fashion. Jurgen Klopp’s boys cross a lot and take plenty of shots, both of which lead to plenty of corners. Indeed, they opened the scoring against the Bees at Anfield from one, so they could prove important to their chances of getting the three points here.

But we’re not betting on goals from corners, just how many there might be. Assuming Brentford do plenty of defending there should be lots of blocks, clearances and deflections, so we’re taking Paddy’s price for Over 11.5 Corners here.

Cards: Over 3.5

These teams were among the bottom five in the Premier League when it came to how many yellow cards were in their games last season. Their two meetings shared a total of just three bookings, which obviously contributed.

They’ve carried on in much the same fashion in 2022/23 too. Liverpool’s league matches have been the most referee friendly in the division, having averaged just 2.2 cards. Brentford are hovering around the bad behaviour relegation zone too, with a 2.9 yellow card average.

We do have a wildcard here, though, in the shape of Stuart Attwell. He did this fixture last season and largely kept his cards in his pocket but he books more players per game than anybody else in the Premier League.

With two tired teams thanks to the hectic schedule since the World Cup, tackles could easily be mistimed and Attwell will be on the transgressors like a puma. Over 3.5 cards looks the pick to tie this Bet Builder all together.
