Wednesday 8pm: Manchester United v Burnley TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football
Burnley (+2)
From the best World Cup final of all time to a round-of-16 League Cup tie in just three days, the great football just keeps coming. Burnley travel to Old Trafford on Wednesday night with a good chance of an upset given Manchester United’s lack of competitive games over the past six weeks.
United are unlikely to play many of the players that exited the World Cup in the knockout stages, with 11 of their stars reaching the last-eight or further. Erik Ten Hag, therefore, is likely to go with the players who received minutes in United’s friendly defeats against Cadiz and Real Betis during the winter break.
Burnley, on the other hand, have won both of their games since Championship football returned earlier in December, scoring three goals in each game.
The Clarets sit six points clear at the top of the second-tier and will give United plenty of problems on Wednesday night. They may not come away with a win, but they should run United close so we’ll kick off with Burnley (+2).
Both teams to score
Burnley have scored six goals in their two games since Championship football resumed and are by far the highest scorers in the division, netting at least 10 more goals than any other Championship side. They face a United side that has conceded 11 goals in their last five games in all competitions, including their two friendlies in Spain.
Admittedly, those friendlies mattered very little, but United have proved that they are susceptible at the back, especially in the absence of their two best centre-halves. United won a six-goal thriller in the previous round of the League Cup, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Wednesday’s game was similarly entertaining with Both Teams To Score.
It seems a long time ago that Alejandro Garnacho was slotting in a last-gasp winner at Fulham. The Argentinian youngster scored the last Premier League goal before the season halted for the winter and had looked like one of United’s most promising players before the break.
In fact, he could have had a World Cup winner’s medal if he came into form a bit earlier in the season. It remains to be seen how the six-week break has affected our man, but there is an excellent chance of Garnacho Scoring Anytime if he can produce similar form on Wednesday night.
Anthony Martial to score anytime
Anthony Martial is United’s only out-and-out striker following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Frenchman has scored four goals in just seven appearances this season, finding the back of the net once every 70 minutes that he has played.
He scored United’s equaliser in their 4-2 win over Aston Villa in the previous round of the League Cup and is the most likely United player to find the back of the net on Wednesday. Martial has had five weeks to get over the injury issues that plagued him during the opening months of the season and Martial is decent value to Score Anytime against Burnley for the fourth time in his United career.
