Argentina to win

Despite having been one goal better than Lionel Messi and co. at both ends of the pitch in the tournament so far, the performances from the Dutch – at least according to the underlying statistics – have been far less impressive.

For instance, Louis van Gaal’s side have conceded 16 shots more than they’ve taken and have a shots on target deficit of five. Coincidentally, Argentina have only allowed 16 shots and five on target full stop, with their difference stats second only to Brazil.

But despite this discrepancy, the South Americans lost to Saudi Arabia while Netherlands are unbeaten since Euro 2020, winning 14 and drawing five of their last 19 matches. As fans of his former clubs can attest, van Gaal’s football isn’t always pretty but it’s often effective.

It may meet it’s match here though. On the balance of play and chances, Argentina would have beaten the Saudis 99 times out of 100 and could easily be heading into this game without a defeat in their last 40 matches. They are stronger than Netherlands at both ends and should have enough to edge a close match.

Player to have 2 Or More Shots On Target: Lionel Messi

If Argentina are to win through, Messi will inevitably have a say. But will it be a goal, or an assist, a brilliant dribble, or all of the above and more? Goats are hard to predict. One thing which looks pretty certain is that Messi will have a couple of shots on target. He has done this in three of his four matches in Qatar, and five of his last seven internationals for which data is available.

While we can’t be certain that he’ll beat Netherlands goalkeeper Andries Noppert, it seems very likely that Messi will test him with at least two shots on target.

Corners: Under 8.5

Almost all the available data points towards there being very few corners in this match. This is one area in which Netherlands have outperformed Argentina at the 2022 World Cup, and even then, their games have only averaged 8.8 each.

There was only one quarter-final at the last World Cup which paid out on over 9.5 corners, and these teams mustered just eight between them across 120 minutes in Brazil eight years ago. It would be safer to go a little higher but under 8.5 corners looks a good value selection.

Player shown a card: Marten de Roon

There are three players at this World Cup who have committed at least 11 fouls without being booked and two of them are Dutch. Joining Morocco’s Hakim Ziyech on the naughty step are Jurrien Timber and Denzel Dumfries.

As such, either would be a fair bet to pick up a yellow card in this match. However, central midfielder Marten de Roon may have to keep a close eye on Messi, which spells trouble. He made four tackles against Qatar and only one foul, but against far stronger opposition those challenges could easily lead to being reprimanded if not well timed. Put de Roon to go in de book to complete your quarter-final Bet Builder.
