Wednesday, November 30: 19:00 – Saudi Arabia v Mexico
TV: BBC, BBC iPlayer RTE Two

All four teams can still qualify for the Last 16 going into their final Group C matches. Poland top the group on four points with both Argentina and Saudi Arabia following on three and Mexico on just one.

Saudi Arabia could qualify with a draw here, but it’ll come down to goal difference if Poland also draw with Argentina. Mexico need to win and could even then be eliminated on goal difference so we should see a cracker of a match here. Let’s get into the stats then and find the four best bets for a Bet Builder.

Over 2.5 Goals

The Saudis have been one of the surprise teams of the World Cup so far, particularly as over their last five official friendly games they only managed to score twice.

Many had thought this lack of goals would be their undoing but after their spirited victory over Argentina and a swashbuckling Matchday Two clash with Poland they’ve shown they can go toe-to-toe with anyone.

Their 2-0 defeat to Poland saw them miss a penalty and they registered a total of 14 shots in their attempt to get something positive from the game. Were it not for the heroics of Wojciech Szczesny between the Polish sticks they may well have won that game.

Both sides cannot afford to sit back here and take their chances on the counter so we’re fully expecting to see an exciting second half with both sides pushing for a badly-needed win which means we should see three goals at the very least.

Both Teams to Score

Mexico have, surprisingly, failed to score over both of their World Cup games thus far even though they had scored nine over their five warm-up friendlies. They have little choice here other than to go for it.

Knowing too that the Saudis rarely keep a clean sheet, they’ll be peppering the goal on sight in search of a win, particularly as if the other game ends level it will come down to goal difference should Mexico win here.

The Falcons will be slightly bruised after their defeat to Poland but will still be confident thanks to beating a much-fancied Argentina in their opening Group C match. We had all expected to see a defensive-minded Saudi Arabia in the tournament but instead we’ve seen one of the highest defensive lines at the competition and players who want to get the ball forward to create chances.

Mexico have only kept three clean sheets over their last eight fixtures and with the boisterous Saudi fans roaring their team on Both Teams to Score looks a given.

Saudi Arabia +1

Mexico are the favourites with the betting public and while they should be good enough for at least a goal here they’ve just not shown enough grit to suggest they’ll get the win here. They were too cautious against an Argentina defence who looked rattled after their shock defeat to the Saudis and against Poland they played it far too safe as they surely thought they’d have an easy win over an already-eliminated side when they faced Saudi Arabia.

The Falcons had other plans however and won’t be shy about getting forward here as they go in search of the goals needed to win. Both of Poland’s goals came against the run of play in their loss and they’ll have learnt some valuable lessons from that game.

They need to be more clinical and less rushed in their attacks but they’ve got plenty of attacking threat to come out on top here.

We’re not going to back them to win though as we want to cover ourselves in case we see a 2-2 so we’re taking them on the +1 Handicap so if they win or the games finishes level our bet wins.

Saudi Arabia to Receive the Most Cards

Saudi Arabia have a bit of a bite about them. They have no qualms about bringing a man to ground and slowing down opposition attacks.

They’ve picked up eight Yellow Cards over both of the World Cup games so far and if we look back into previous competitive games they picked up a total of 17 bookings over their last seven fixtures. Against Mexico’s speedy attack we can see them picking up the majority of the bookings here.
