Germany to Win

Germany are a difficult team to predict coming into this World Cup. The 2014 world champions have been poor in their last two major tournaments, crashing out in the group stages in 2018 and exiting in the round-of-16 at the Euro 2020 championships last summer.

They have certainly improved since Hansi Flick took the reins after the Euros, but they have also struggled to win games in 2022. The Germans have won just three of their nine games this year, drawing five and losing one.

In their defence, it is difficult to read into friendlies and Nations League games this year, with teams prioritising World Cup form. Most of their games have also been against elite nations, so their form isn’t all that concerning. They should have just about enough to overcome a formidable Japan outfit in their opening group game.

Japan have talent all around the pitch and would probably be favourites to progress if they were in any other group. They are just unfortunate to find themselves in the same group as Germany and Spain.

Joshua Kimmich to Attempt 90 or More Passes

Joshua Kimmich was the heartbeat of Flick’s Champions League-winning Bayern team and is now the heartbeat of Flick’s Germany.

Kimmich is a supreme talent and will be key to Germany’s hopes of winning a fifth World Cup in Qatar.

He averages 79 passes per game for Bayern in the Bundesliga this season averages even more for Germany. Kimmich averages a whopping 106 passes per game in World Cup qualifying and an equally impressive 88 passes per game against some of Europe’s elite in the Nations League.

Germany will almost certainly control possession against Japan and Kimmich will be central to that.

Over 9.5 Corners

Only one World Cup fixture to date has had ten corners or more, but Germany and Japan could easily reach that figure.

Germany have on 29 corners in their six games before the World Cup at a rate of just under five per game, while Japan have won 41 corners in their last six at a rate of almost seven per game.

Germany will dominate possession and territory on Wednesday afternoon and should, by extension, pepper the Japanese goal with shots.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see at least ten corners on Wednesday.

Germany Under 1.5 Cards

Germany do not receive many yellow cards. They received just 12 yellow cards in 10 World Cup qualifying games and received just 11 in six Nations League games earlier in the year.

It is hardly surprising, considering they dominate possession in almost every game they play.

Germany had an average of 75% possession in World Cup qualifying and 65% in their recent Nations League campaign.

They are unlikely to give too many bookings away if they hold the ball for the majority of the game and Wednesday’s game against Japan should be no different.
