World Cup? What World Cup? It’s business as usual in EFL League One and Two this weekend and it’ll be that way all the way through the sandy spectacle in Qatar. So, to celebrate the relative footballing purity of the EFL, we’ve constructed a crafty acca for Saturday’s 3pm games starting with Barnsley v MK Dons.
The Tykes are going well in the third tier and sit 8th on 27 points after 17 games. For MK, they’re way down in 21st and have fallen off a cliff after their playoff appearance last term. They’ve won just one of their last eight league games and have lost six of those as well.
Barnsley had a little wobble in the second half of October but they’re back on track now with two wins on the bounce. With home advantage and the vastly-superior form, we have to kick off with a Barnsley Win.
Bristol Rovers v Peterborough – Peterborough to Win
We’re off to the Westcountry next for Bristol Rovers hosting Peterborough. The Posh lost last time out late on to Exeter but rallied since with a comprehensive victory over Salford in the FA Cup and they’re 4th in League One.
Joey Barton’s Pirates are down in 17th and are in shaky form. Following three wins on the bounce they’ve not got the three points for four games, drawing three and losing one.
The thing here is that Peterborough don’t do draws, with just one to their name all season. They’ve won four of their last six in this division and, as Rovers seem to have lost that winning feeling, we’ll have a bit of a punt on Peterborough to Win.
Burton v Plymouth – Plymouth to Win
Our final League One game takes in the sights and sounds of Burton’s Pirelli Stadium as they welcome Plymouth to the midlands. Argyle are absolutely flying and top the table with a hearty 42 points from 18 games. They’re four points clear of Ipswich and haven’t lost in the league since August.
They did gat hammered 5-1 by League Two Grimsby a couple games ago in the FA Cup but we’ll put that firmly in the ‘concentrating on the league’ bracket. The Brewers have won one of their last seven League One contests and that was at home to Cheltenham who are 19th, four places above them. I can’t work out why the price is so good but it has to be Plymouth to Win. NAP territory, this.
Colchester v Doncaster – Doncaster to Win
We finish in League Two with two sides who have fallen from grace somewhat in recent times. It’s Colchester v Doncaster, of course. Col U are having an absolutely shocking time of it and are rock bottom of the EFL with two wins and 11 points from 18 matches this season.
Donny are maybe just starting to click into gear and are hovering just below the playoffs in 10th with 28 points from their 18 matches. Crucially for us, they’ve won their last two games and should make it three here. Predictably, Colchester are in terrible form and haven’t won in the league since the start of last month.
Doncaster are not setting the world alight at the moment but they have beaten two sides in the bottom third of the league in their last two outings. With Colchester the worst of the lot it should pay to back Doncaster to Win here.
