There is no player in the Premier League who is more overdue a goal than Arsenal’s former Manchester City forward.
Jesus has amassed 2.7 expected goals in the five league matches since he last scored. In the last four, he has had 15 shots, 13 from within the box, six clear-cut chances and five shots on target, and all he has to show for it is a partridge in a pear tree.
He’s only scored against bad teams so far this season too: Aston Villa, Brentford, Leicester and Tottenham. With Wolves having lost their three matches against ‘big six’ clubs by an aggregate 7-0 score line this season, Jesus should get chances. It’s about time he took at least one of them.
The aforementioned stats help explain why Arsenal’s number nine goes into the weekend with the fifth most shots of any player in the Premier League in 2022/23 and the third most efforts on target.
Naturally more have been at the Emirates rather than on the road, but Jesus had four shots at Brentford and three last week at Chelsea. Perhaps he just likes west London? I hear it’s very nice at this time of year.
Only four teams in the Premier League have conceded more home shots than Wolves this season, and three of them are alongside them in the bottom five of the table. The other is the Bees, so if Jesus can have three efforts at their place, he can repeat the trick at Molineux.
As much as Jesus might be due a goal, he’s also due a card. The 25-year-old had a spell of four yellow cards in five league matches across August and September but kept his nose clean in the last six games.
However, having committed three fouls twice in that period (and 10 in total) he may have been fortunate to escape a fifth booking of the campaign. Only two players in the division have been punished for more fouls in 2022/23 and neither of them are forwards.
Surprising stat, no? He’s hardly Kevin Davies or Diego Costa. Yet in only two matches this season has he not committed at least one infringement in the opinion of the referee.
And with Stuart Attwell, the top flight’s most card-friendly ref, in control of this match, Jesus’ recent run of leniency from officials should come to an end. Back him to receive a card.
As a centre-forward, Jesus isn’t going to make many passes, no matter how poor Wolves are. That isn’t to say he can’t breach the 30-pass barrier though.
The Brazil international has done so four times this season – including away to Brentford and Manchester United – and has never attempted fewer than 20 for the Gunners.
As they will dominate possession, he should reach 30, but I wouldn’t dip a toe into any of Paddy’s markets for more passes than that. Good luck, Jesus, we all believe in you.
