Manchester United to Win
Manchester United may very well live to regret their failure to find a fourth goal during last week’s win over Sheriff Tiraspol. United need a two-goal win in Spain on Thursday if they are to top their group but they could have made lives much easier for themselves if they had managed just one more goal last week which would have left them two goals behind Sociedad and needing a one-goal win to top the Group E on goals scored.
A win away against their unbeaten opponents would have been difficult enough but to win by two goals is a huge ask for a United side that struggles to score goals. The Red Devils have beaten Sociedad 0-4 in an away game in the Europa League before although that game was played in Turin during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Only a harshly awarded penalty separated the sides when they met at Old Trafford in September and it should be similarly tight on Thursday evening. United, who are unbeaten in eight games in all competitions should have enough to gain revenge for that defeat; doing so by two goals or more is a different matter altogether.

United have found defensive solidity since going down to a 6-3 hammering at Manchester City at the beginning of October. Erik Ten Hag’s side have conceded just two goals in their last five league games and have managed ten clean sheets in their opening 17 games in all competitions. In contrast, they had kept just two cleans in their opening 17 games last season.
The arrival of Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez has brought a stability not seen at United for many years. It is imperative that United keep a clean sheet here if they are to pull off a two-goal win on Thursday and they are more than capable of doing so.

Marcus Rashford to Score Anytime
Marcus Rashford appears to have rediscovered the form that made him such a menace during the 2020/2021 campaign. Rashford has scored terrific headers in each of his last two games and had been unlucky not to find the back of the net in several games prior. He’s also United’s top scorer with seven goals in all competitions, including three goals in the Europa League.
He is by far the most likely United player to score at present and seems to get on the end of several chances in every game he plays. The English forward scored in the 4-0 victory against Sociedad two seasons ago and is good value to do so again on Thursday.
Christian Eriksen Anytime Assist
While Rashford has scored in each of his last two games, Christian Eriksen has provided assists in his last two appearances, sending in delightful crosses for United’s opener against both Sheriff and West Ham. Eriksen has been one of the signings of the summer and has provided five assists in his short United career, including two in the Europa League.
The Danish midfielder averages 3.2 key passes per game in Europe this season – the highest average of any United player – and is good value to set up one of his teammates in Spain. Eriksen has already set up Rashford on two occasions this season and it wouldn’t be hugely surprising to see that same combination come up trumps on Thursday.
