Wednesday 5:45pm: Real Madrid v Celtic
TV: BT Sport 4

Real Madrid are comfortably through to the next round of the Champions League but there’s also enough pride that should push them to want to win it.

Celtic, meanwhile, are four points behind Shakhtar and are destined to finish bottom. These occasions can usually throw up a curveball, but given Carlo Ancelotti himself said that they wouldn’t be signing anyone in January after Real’s disappointing draw with Girona last weekend, I feel this might prompt a response.

Real Madrid to Win

We could spend forever on this, but I won’t waste your time too much. Real Madrid will win this game of football, not just because they’re playing inferior opposition, but because winning in the Champions League is essentially a personality trait for this group.

Even though finishing second in a group is often more beneficial because of situations exactly like this, the serial winners of this competition won’t accept it.

Both Teams to Score

Madrid’s last three Champions League ties have seen them concede in each contest. Combine that with the fact they didn’t manage a La Liga clean sheet until the eighth week of the season, backing Madrid not to keep a clean sheet seems the logical thing to do.

That’s no endorsement of Celtic’s attacking prowess, but it does speak to the occasion – or lack thereof. European nights will always feel special to Celtic, not least because they’ve won a European Cup, but because they’ve got such a cakewalk of a domestic campaign.

Half-Time: Draw

Quality might well come through in the end, but Real Madrid look slightly stuck in the mud – as is usually the case post-Champions League-winning seasons whereby you don’t make big additions.

And while I completely understand that bringing in Antonio Rudiger and signing Aurelien Tchouameni would be massive plusses for the vast majority of clubs in the world, they’re not marquee and the gradual uncertainty that comes with that has made otherwise normally easy tasks seem quite laborious.

Federico Valverde to Score or Assist

So confident was Carlo in his ability, that he said he’d walk away if he didn’t have ten goals by the end of the season. Well, Valverde has notched in three of his last four league games and comfortably looks their best player at this moment.

Crucially, I don’t mean just on the ball – but also appears to want to play in every game, which can’t be said for the rest of Los Blancos.
