Chelsea have rescued their Champions League campaign with impressive back-to-back wins over AC Milan, but they still have some work to do to ensure their place in the knockout stages.
The blues will guarantee their place in the knockout stages as group winners with a win in Austria on Tuesday night, while a draw will all but guarantee their progression.
They will face a tough test against a Red Bull Salzburg side that remains unbeaten after four games in this season’s competition.
Three of Salzburg’s four games in this season’s competition have ended in 1-1 draws, including the reverse fixture against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea, on the other hand, have drawn each of their last two Premier League outings and did not look particularly convincing in either one of them.
A draw seems the most likely result on Tuesday night.
Chelsea have recorded back-to-back Champions League clean sheets and have only conceded three goals in eight games since Graham Potter took over at the beginning of September.
However, their opponents have scored in every Champions League matchweek this season, albeit scoring just one goal on all four occasions.
Salzburg caused Chelsea problems at Stamford Bridge and deserved their point.
Chelsea, meanwhile, boast an excellent defensive record under Potter but owe much of that to Kepa’s recent discovery that he is, in fact, a good goalkeeper.
The Spanish ‘keeper made several outstanding saves to keep both Aston Villa and Brentford at bay but the fact that he was forced into so many excellent saves highlights that Chelsea’s defensive performance has not been as good as their clean sheet record suggests.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see Salzburg record yet another 1-1 draw.
It’s fair to say that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has not set the world on fire since joining Chelsea from Barcelona in the summer.
The Gabonese striker hardly had a kick in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Saturday and has scored just one Premier League goal in four appearances since returning to England.
However, Aubameyang scored in Chelsea’s two most recent Champions League games, scoring in both games against AC Milan.
He may not be the same striker that arrived at Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund, but he remains lethal when given the chance and seems to be flourishing in Europe.
He can score for the third Champions League game running on Tuesday.
All of the hype surrounds 19-year-old Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko at Salzburg, but it has been his strike partner Noah Okafor who has kept them in contention in the Champions League this season.
Okafor has scored three of Salzburg’s four goals in the competition this season, including the equaliser at Stamford Bridge last month.
He scored in each of Salzburg’s opening three games, only failing to score in the recent away fixture against Dinamo Zagreb.
Okafor is Salzburg’s top scorer this season, scoring eight goals in all competitions.
Despite the justified hype surrounding Sesko, Okafor appears to be more capable of consistently delivering in important games, as Chelsea found out last month.
He can make an impact again in the return fixture and is good value to do so.
