Last time the Germans visited Wembley Stadium, they were sent packing from Euro 2020 with goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane securing a 2-0 victory for the Three Lions.
Since then, in their only other meeting since, the sides played out a rather dull 1-1 draw, but we’re hoping for a little bit more excitement this time around. Note we only said ‘hoping for’ – we’re not actually expecting a feast of football, as you’ll see from the selections below.
Monday 7:45pm: England v Germany
TV: Channel 4
Double Chance: Germany and Draw
England have been poor of late. Two bore draws against Italy and Germany represent Gareth Southgate’s side’s only points from this Nations League season – with two dismal losses to Hungary thrown into the mix.
As much as we’d love to see the Three Lions come out with a statement performance ahead of November’s World Cup, we have to be realistic. Whilst the Germans aren’t in the best of nick themselves, they’ll fancy their chances to come away from a potentially toxic Wembley atmosphere with all three points – and failing that, at least a draw.
There’s only pride at stake for the hosts, and that may not be enough to see them past Hansi Flick’s side.
Under 2.5 Goals
Goals have been hard to come by for England. Barring the 4-0 embarrassment at home to Hungary in June, every Nations League fixture in this group has seen less than three goals.
Germany haven’t been too dissimilar, with their 5-2 thrashing of Italy the only time their games have seen more than two – they’ve been merchants for a 1-1 draw, but come into this match off a 1-0 defeat by Hungary.

Harry Kane to have 1+ shot on target
The Tottenham striker has scored England’s only goal in this Nations League campaign – netting a late penalty against Germany last time these two sides met.
It is difficult to ignore the England captain, who has made a decent start to the Premier League season under Antonio Conte. Although, in keeping with the current feeling around this England squad, we’ve stopped short of the optimism of a Kane goal, instead plumping for a shot on target. If fit, the captain is surely a certainty on the teamsheet too.
Timo Werner to have 1+ shot in each half
The ex-Chelsea striker has had a decent return to life in the Bundesliga, bagging four goals in nine outings for new side RB Leipzig. It’s this form that has seen him chosen to lead to line for Germany in this round of fixtures, especially after bagging a brace against Italy in June.
Again, with goals not a certainty, we’ve stopped short of backing Werner to get his name on the teamsheet, but a shot in each half looks more likely.
