SELECTION 1: Chelsea to Win
There’s still work to be done at Man City, that much is wholesale clear. It feels like they’re somewhat stuck mid-identity shift, and therefore the passages of play resulting in mish-mash approach between Coombs, Angeldal and Aleixandri who are trying to get link-up in different ways.
It comes across as dysfunctional. And while simply having much better players over the last two years has resulted in improved league results, the lack of cohesion means they’re simply not ready for the tackle the big two yet.
What it also means it that they’re likely to be under the hammer consistently because they can’t get out.
SELECTION 2: Fran Kirby to Score Anytime
Pumping balls into the box and going direct to Sam Kerr will work nine times out of ten against teams who simply aren’t able for her quick feet. But City should be able to manage in this regard.
Kerr netted in this reverse fixture last year but only through sloppy play from Georgia Stanway. It was Kirby who shone, and needing to take a player on in order to invite City out of their shape, there’s only place you’ll look for this.
Think of her goal against City from last November.
SELECTION 3: Liverpool to Win
I’d start this off by saying I’d worry about Liverpool without Leanne Kiernan, but ultimately they managed to prevail against one of the best sides in the WSL last week without her.
It’s not so much that I’m confident the hosts will be contending with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal come season’s end, it’s just how much belief they’ll carry into a game against Everton after an historic result like that.
That level of a shift might be tough to come back from in most instances, but a Merseyside derby is the perfect source of continuity in this regard. Everton still won’t respect a newly-promoted side enough to not try and play ball. The Reds are perfectly drilled to catch teams on the break.
SELECTION 4: Both Teams to Score: No
Despite conceding 70% possession to Chelsea last week, they managed to give up just four shots on target with one of them coming from the penalty spot.
Often teams are coming into the WSL and trying to forge an identity to attract players and fans to their games – free-flowing, easy-on-the-eye football.
It generally leads to them getting thumped. Liverpool are too pragmatic for this, and will treat Everton the exact same as they treated the champions last week.
