Thursday 5.45pm: Sheriff Tiraspol v Manchester United
TV: BT Sport 2

Both Teams to Score

Sheriff Tiraspol welcome Manchester United to Moldova on Thursday night for their Group E Europa League clash. The hosts were 3-0 winners away to Cyprus’ Omonia Nicosia last week while United were 0-1 losers at home to Real Sociedad. The hosts have been gaining a bit of reputation as giant killers over the last few seasons, beating both Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk last season and won’t fear the Red Devils coming to town.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

Sheriff are in good form of late, winning three and drawing two (winning one on penalties) of their last five fixtures while at the Bolshaya Sportivnaya Arena have won two, drawn two (winning one on pens) and lost one, scoring six while conceding three. Their European record has seen them winning two, drawing one (winning it on pens) and losing two.

United had looked to have turned a corner after a bad start to the season, winning four in a row following two defeats in their opening two fixtures. However, Real Sociedad did a number on them last week and Erik ten Hag’s side were wayward in their finishing.

They’ve scored eight over their seven games so far though and have scored in all 15 of their most recent away games in both the Europa League and Champions League. With both teams in decent form then in front of the sticks we have to take the value odds here on Both Teams To Score.

Sheriff (+2)

We’re getting some pretty great odds on Sheriff (+2) here. Of their last 14 home European games in the Champions League and Europa League the home side have only lost by three goals on one occasion and that was when Real Madrid came for revenge after they’d beaten Los Blancos in Madrid earlier in the campaign. Of those 14 games they’ve only lost three over 90 minutes.

As mentioned above, the hosts are in decent goal-scoring nick, scoring eight over their last five fixtures and six over their last five at home. Man United are in similar goal-scoring form.

The Red Devils have netted eight goals over their seven games so far, conceding nine and have only beaten two teams by three goals or more since this time last season, a 3-0 home win over Brentford last May and away to Spurs last October, a Spurs performance that was so bad it saw Nuno Espirito Santo given his marching orders shortly thereafter. Sheriff have little to fear here and while United should come out on top we can’t see them winning by three, particularly as the hosts rarely ship many goals so Sheriff (+2) should have a good chance.

Scott McTominay to be Booked

Scott McTominay comes from the Paul Scholes school of football tackling, he thinks he’s really good at it but in reality he’s very bad at it, see his recent assault on Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus for example. The angry Scot gives away a ton of free kicks when in action for his side and we need to exploit it. Man United’s No. 39 has played in all six of their Premier League games so far this season, starting five and appearing as a substitute in one, earning himself a yellow card in four of those six games.

He didn’t feature in their home 0-1 loss to Real Sociedad last weekend and looks set to be recalled in order to break up any counter attacks made by Sheriff in the middle of the park. With his recent record of finding himself in the referee’s wee black book we’re getting plenty of value here in the odds on McTominay to be Booked.

Over 2.5 Goals

Over 2.5 Goals has only been seen in two of Sheriff’s last eight fixtures and also in just two of their last eight on home turf. United’s games haven’t exactly been full of goals of late too, just two of their last five seeing Over 2.5 Goals as well as two of their last five away competitive fixtures.

However, with both teams likely to net in this game, and with United needing a win to get off the mark in this year’s Europa League, I think we’ll just pass the Over 2.5 Goals mark.
