Wednesday 8pm: Chelsea v RB Salzburg
TV: BT Sport 3

Chelsea (-1)

New manager Graham Potter has had a full week to settle in at Stamford Bridge following the weekend’s postponements and now has a perfect opportunity to get off to a winning start in a vital Champions League game. Chelsea’s defeat to Dinamo Zagreb last week was made slightly less disastrous by AC Milan’s failure to beat Red Bull Salzburg in their opening group game and the Blues now have a chance to get back on track in Group E.

Salzburg are no mugs by any means and will undoubtedly give Potter a few headaches on Wednesday night, but he should be aided by the infamous new manager bounce. Potter has demonstrated that he is one of the brightest and most innovative managers in the Premier League and given that he has had a week to prepare for this clash, his new charges should be prepared for anything Salzburg throw at them.

Chelsea and Potter both need a win on Wednesday night for different reasons, with the new boss in need of a fast start and Chelsea in need of three points to ignite their Champions League campaign. They should do so with some comfort. Chelsea (-1) kicks us off.

Both Teams To Score

Chelsea have invested heavily in defensive players this summer, but it has so far been to no avail. The Blues have been leaking goals all season, managing just one clean sheet in their opening six Premier League games.

Chelsea conceded nine goals in six games in their last six games under Thomas Tuchel and will need some correcting before they find the defensive form that saw them win the Champions League in 2021. They face a Salzburg outfit that has scored 21 times in eight games in the Austrian Bundesliga this season and may struggle to keep their second clean sheet of the season, even with the benefit of a new manager’s ideas. It’s Both Teams to Score next.

Raheem Sterling to Score Anytime

Raheem Sterling had been one of Chelsea’s only decent performers in what was otherwise an abject start to the season under Tuchel. The former Manchester City winger has scored three times since moving to Stamford Bridge and is the only Chelsea player to score more than one goal this season.

Sterling has scored three of the last five goals they have scored, opening the scoring in two different games. The signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should take some of the pressure off Sterling in the long run, but the English winger is Chelsea’s most potent attacking player at present and he can make the difference on Wednesday night as Sterling Scores Anytime.

Reece James Anytime Assist

Chelsea’s players have offered precious little in terms of creative football this season, registering a meagre six assists between them in seven games. The arrival of Potter should be accompanied by an injection of creative football and Reece James, in particular, should flourish.

James has only registered one assist, but he has been Chelsea’s most creative player this season. The English right-back creates an average of 1.17 chances per game this season, averaging 1.4 key passes per game. The defender, who provided nine assists last season, is the most likely Chelsea player to set up a teammate on Wednesday night.
