Sunday 4.30pm: Nottingham Forest v Tottenham
TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League

Tottenham to Win

There are certain match-ups of teams that inevitably make you think of one specific example from the past, depending on your age. With Nottingham Forest and Tottenham it’s the image of managers Brian Clough and Terry Venables walking out, hand in hand, ahead of the 1991 FA Cup final.

Spurs were 2-1 winners in extra-time in an eventful match that day. Gary Lineker missed a penalty, Gazza played so recklessly he injured himself for over a year and Tottenham only have two League Cups to show for their endeavours ever since.

NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?

Still, at least they didn’t spend two decades in the doldrums as Forest have. After a disappointing showing at Newcastle in their return to the big time, Steve Cooper’s side looked better in beating West Ham and getting a point at Everton.

In-form Tottenham will provide a stern test though. They may have been largely outplayed and needed a 96th minute goal to get a point at Chelsea in their last away match, but Spurs had the better of the high value chances.

Tottenham should win here. Only two teams have allowed more expected goals than Forest so far this season, and they have yet to face Manchester City unlike the two teams below them in the standings. There should be a few chances for Harry Kane and co., so we’ll mark our card for an away win.

Under 2.5 goals

Nottingham Forest have had such a high turnover of players that comparing the current side with the lads who won promotion is almost a waste of time. One consistent theme has been the lack of goals in their matches though.

Their results so far in 2022/23 have been 0-2, 1-0 and 1-1, while less than half of their Championship matches paid out on over 2.5 goals last season. If Spurs score early, it’s not impossible they could rack up a big win here.

However, neither team will be disappointed if it stays tight early and that will push down the scoring potential. Three of the five goals in Forest’s games have occurred in the final 12 minutes of normal time, and this could be one where Tottenham score late to take the points with Under 2.5 Goals.

Tottenham to have 5 or More Shots On Target

The visitors might not score many, particularly with Dean Henderson in fine form, but they will ensure that the Forest goalkeeper earns his corn this weekend. Since Antonio Conte took over, Spurs have averaged 5.8 shots in their Premier League away games.

Add in that Cooper’s crew have conceded more of them than any other top flight team so far this term and Tottenham should easily have at least five shots on target.

Under 10.5 Corners

These teams have been at opposite ends of the corner count in the early weeks of this campaign. No team has had fewer corners than Nottingham Forest while only Chelsea have had more than Tottenham.

What they do have in common though is that both averaged Under 10.5 Corners in their league campaigns last season. On that basis, we’ll back this match to do likewise.

Over 4.5 Cards

Nottingham Forest’s matches were the most card heavy in the 2021/22 Championship. Leave aside a couple of decimal places and they haven’t eased off in the top flight yet either, with their total of nine received leading the way in the top flight.

Tottenham’s record doesn’t make much sense, in that they were booked five times across their two home matches and not once in a London derby at Stamford Bridge (though had Anthony Taylor been able to spot blatant fouls and hair pulls, it might have been a different story).

Craig Pawson is in charge of this match. He’s a card friendly ref and has averaged 4.1 bookings across the 28 matches he has reffed for Spurs. With Forest’s feisty form, we’ll complete our Bet Builder with Over 4.5 Cards.
