Linfield v RFS – RFS to Win
7.45pm – Europa Conference League qualifier (BBC N.Ireland/ iPlayer)
With five minutes to go, Linfield would have been supremely confident of landing in the group stages of the Conference League.
And in two fell swoops, that dream seemed to burn in front of them as they were held to a 2-2 draw away in Riga.
It’s a very hard psychological barrier to overcome: from being incredibly confident that you’re progressing, to having a tie swing fully in the favour of the opposition you felt you had the measure of.
I’m not sure the tie hasn’t already been decided in the minds of the Linfield players.
Hearts v FC Zurich – Hearts to Win
8pm – Europa League qualifier (BBC Scotland/ iPlayer)
I really don’t think there’s a whole lot for Hearts to fear here.
Their penalty might well have been soft, but when they ran at FCZ in last week’s 2-1 first-leg defeat, they didn’t have many answers. It felt like Hearts were subject to protecting a lead and the lack of them being proactive caught up to them.
FCZ’s equaliser came from a long boot upfield that wasn’t cleared, while their winner came from Hearts sitting in trying to claim a draw.
I’d certainly be of the persuasion that if Hearts actually held the ball, they’ll create plenty of chances and the perception that just because a side are from an expensive-to-visit country, they’re better at football, will disappear into thin air.
Shamrock Rovers v Ferencvaros – Ferencvaros to Win
8pm – Europa League qualifier (RTE2/ RTE Player)
I’d very rarely been as impressed by an Irish side’s opposition in European competition as I was with Ferencvaros in Budapest.
Honestly, they look like a side who won’t even struggle to qualify from the group stages of the Europa League.
And winning a second leg when four-nil up from the first leg never seems like a shrewd place to put your money, but this is a rare situation where Rovers are already guaranteed to be in the Conference League anyway.
They’ll be celebrating and Ferenvaros will be as ruthless as they were in Hungary.
