Our footie tipster Andrew Cunneen has a trio of picks in mind.

Most of my favourite things in life happen about eight o’clock.

Even back to early days: chippy tea; those quiz shows where contestants answer what essentially trivia questions for nine year olds for the chance to win a second-hand car; a sleepover with my best mate.

As I’ve gotten older? Usually around the time you’ve cracked a can or two and your mates are plotting a way to avoid showing ID later that evening, right down to the sing-song to Teenage Dirtbag.

Now? My wife gets ready to go out; literal After Eight chocolates by the packet and a plethora of football to choose from.

NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?

I won’t be divulging any tips to beat the bouncer nor will I be suggesting for you to disown your favourite chocolate in favour of mine, but I can tell you a little bit about the 8pm-ish kickoffs on this fine Saturday night.

Seems an odd time for us in the British Isles but the Europeans bloody love it. Hardly a surprise given they have their dinner around midnight.

Anyway, profit doesn’t have a time limit. And I’m not asking you to sit through Macclesfield either – we’ve got a tasty trifecta of tantalising titans.

7:45pm: Brest v Marseille – Marseille to Win

Losing Romain Faivre has been Brest’s biggest offseason issue and do you know what they did to replace him? Absolutely nothing.

Michel Der Zakarian’s approach to Brest changed drastically as the season went on. When he came in, he was conservative and happy to rack up points to ensure safety, as was his entire goal.

But after it seemed as though Brest weren’t going to be in relegation trouble, they opened it up and drew just three of their last 27 games in the league.

This is the best Marseille squad since the glory days and I’d fully expect Luis Suarez (not that one) to rip Brest apart before he ends up signing for Chelsea in July.

Carlo Ancelotti

7:45pm: Salernitana v Roma – Under 2.5 Goals

For all that Roma have recruited incredibly well, Jose Mourinho’s approach to away games in any league remains the same.

Last year, though, he wasn’t getting a return on that theory. There were under 2.5 goals in just six of their nineteen away games in Serie A last year and this has been a point of emphasis for Mourinho in 2022 – to bring in players that will commit to defensive shape in Gini Wijnaldum and Nemanja Matic, with an ace up his sleeve to break with. That cog is Paulo Dybala. This team will be different.

9pm: Almeria v Real Madrid – Half Time: The Draw

Is it hard to find an angle into a 2/5 shot playing against a side that most people think is the resort they went to when they were fourteen?

Normally. But in this instance, Madrid tackling anyone is problematic because of their midweek test against Frankfurt in Helsinki.

In theory, they’ve got enough quality t overcome that and that’s fine – but most of that quality is really set into the first XI rather than anything else.

You might recall last year’s Champions League final dilemma around selection was limited to one position. That’s the unfortunate reality, so we can bank on a slow start here.
