19.45: Blackburn v Hartlepool – Blackburn -1
Rovers are short odds to do the business here against Hartlepool. They’ve started their season very well with two wins, a 1-0 home victory over QPR in their opening Championship fixture and beat Swansea 0-3 away from home last weekend. The Pools Monkey Hangers (best nickname in English football) have had a terrible start to their campaign, losing 4-0 away to Walsall in their opening fixture and drawing 0-0 at home to Wimbledon on Saturday last.
Blackburn actually beat the opposition 0-1 on July 20th in a pre-season friendly and with their strong start they should pretty easily advance to the next round here. The hosts have scored at least two in three of their last five competitive games and kept a clean sheet in two of those games. Match this with Hartlepool’s bad away form at the end of last season where they won just one of their last five, drawing two and losing two. Blackburn should walk this so we’re taking them on the Handicap.
19.45: Coventry v Bristol City – Both Teams to Score
Coventry began their season with a 1-1 draw away to Sunderland and haven’t played since while Bristol City were on the wrong end of both of their Championship fixtures, losing 2-1 away to Hull City and going 2-3 down to Sunderland on home soil. The Sky Blues ended last season with just one win over their last five, drawing two and losing two and share the same record over their last five home games where they scored seven and conceded 10.
As mentioned, the Robins have lost both of their league games so far but at least scored three goals over the two games and they ended last season with two wins and three draws, sharing the same record on their travels where they scored seven and conceded eight. With both teams conceding and scoring plenty over recent competitive games the best option here is a Both Teams to Score pick.

Middlesbrough are also very short odds to advance to the next round here but they’ve not gotten off to the best of starts with an opening day 1-1 draw at home to West Brom followed by a 3-2 loss away to QPR. Barnsley lost their opening game 1-0 away to Plymouth before beating Cheltenham 1-0 at home on Saturday. ‘Boro won two, drawn one and lost two of their last five competitive games and have the same record over their last five home competitive games, scoring six and conceding four with Over 2.5 Goals landing in just one of those five games.
The visitors were relegated from the Championship last season finishing bottom of the pile with just six wins over 46 games. They’ve won just one of their last five competitive fixtures, losing four and away from home have drawn one and lost four, scoring three while conceding 12. With both sides struggling for goals we’re likely looking at a 1-0, 2-0 home win here so backing Unders, above Evens at the time of writing, has the value.
19.45: Port Vale v Rotherham – Port Vale to Win
Port Vale have won one and lost one of their opening League One fixtures while visiting side Rotherham drew their opening Championship game 1-1 at home to Swansea. Of course both sides had successful seasons last campaign with the hosts being promoted from League Two via the Playoffs while Rotherham finished second to Wigan in League One.
The home side have won two, drawn one and lost one of their last five competitive fixtures while on home soil share the same stats, scoring eight and conceding eight with BTTS and Overs landing in four of those five. The away side have won two, drawn two and lost one of their last five competitive games while on the road have won one, drawn two and lost two, scoring just three while conceding six. With the home side in the better scoring form we’re liking the odds here for them to cause an upset.
19.45: Sheffield Wednesday v Sunderland – Both Teams to Score
Wednesday have drawn one and won one of their opening League One games while Sunderland have also drawn one and won one over both of their opening Championship fixtures. The hosts have won two, drawn two and lost one of their last five competitive games while at home have won three and drawn two, scoring 11 and conceding six with Overs landing in three and BTTS in four.
The Black Cats have won three and drawn two of their last five competitive games while on their travels have also won three and drawn two, scoring seven and conceding four with BTTS occurring in three. With both teams then in good goal-scoring nick and neither losing over their last 10 we have to go with a BTTS pick here.
